Another question for all you lovely HHO-ers! :)

Has anybody found or used a flyspray which actually works? We have used 2 different bottles of spray on 2 different horses and they are still coming in with fly bites on them (the chestnut even has a fly sheet on).

I did make one many years ago for my first pony...sure, it kept the flies away but attracted the bloomin' wasps!!

Has anybody got any opinions on fly sprays? Seems the horse flies are out earlier this year!

I'm about to try the avon skin so soft method!! I too have been making my own, which is ok, and seems to work, but doesn't last long!!

Fly repellants are like efumes on women. They react to the different skins of the horses so some work better on some horses than others. For instance, the only two that have worked for mine (that I have tried) are Deosect and Fly away. For others, neither of these work.

Deosect is fab, very pricey at about £32 to £35 a tine, but you dilute it down & it will last one horse 2 seasons. Keeps the flys away a treat.

Coopers fly repellant plus is the super strong one, it's really good. Most of the time I just make up my own with tea, vinegar and citronella oil. I'm going to start taking a little spray bottle on long rides to re-apply it.

Coopers Plus is the best run of the mill one. At least it lasts more than a couple of hours.

I've also used Deosect in previous years but didn't find it all that good. I still had to apply it as regularly as the Coppers lotion.

Have used Flectron cattle tags this summer, without much success I must say. The flies aren't being put off.

I haven't tried Phaser though.... that's next on my list once the Cooper's has run out.

The only one I've found that actually works on midges and horse flies as well as the 'normal' flies is the Leovet Power Phaser.

However the Coopers Extra strength liquid and Midgeaway gel aren't too bad.

another thumbs up for power phaser. ive been using it with a nirmal fly sheet for m mare with sweet itch and her symptoms have calmed down a treat.

We've tried Naf Off (pink) and Deet (black), we've tried Lincoln Fly Repellant, gel and spray, tried making our own AND using a human repellant on us. The girls are both on garlic (which is supposed to help???) and we're still being eaten :P
We're trying a white bottle with a green and yellow label atm, the name of which escapes me...but however its not working.
Maybe power phaser and deosect next then????

What we're using now is Defleqt if anyone knows that? Stinks like vinegar :D (Kel loves me for that!)
I guess its just gonna have to be process of elimination until we find one that works....? She's never really been this bothered, but she has quite a few bites on her lately :(

Power Phazer works on the horse flies with us and the only one that seems to.

Yep, agree, been using it for YEARS! It works a treat, even on me and hubby. anything else tried just like perfume in comparison, including the homemade version, which i spent AGES making!!
It is expensive but it does definitely work. I spray it onto flies and watch them die!!

Made me giggle :p
Just odd as Kelly (she's dark bay) never usually suffers with flies to a bad extent but the chestnut sometimes comes in covered in lumps (even under her fly sheet) and some have been bleeding, but Kelly's started to come in covered in little bites too now so I have bought her a full fly sheet to see if that will deter the little s@ds a bit ;)
