I'm trying to find a part-sharer for one of my geldings but haven't had any interest at all so far

He's brilliant to do in all ways, fab show jumper and xc - dressage is pretty good but needs a decent rider to push the right buttons. His only fault is that he can nap when out hacking so needs someone confident to hack him but in all other respects he's a perfect gent...

He's easily ridden by teenage girls and has even been ridden by a 7yo!! ....BUT he's 18.1hh!

I've put his height in the ad and wonder whether this is what's putting people off?

I think the UK is just lacking in tall people

.
I'm the tallest person out of everyone i know - and i know a fair few! But, in answer to your question nope

I do think over 17hh does tend to put people off, my horse (who is 17.1hh) was sold as 16.3hh! I have to say I'd put him down as 17.3hh in an advert, as its for a sharer, sounds cheeky but may just get that bit more interest. I personally am not put off and considered an 18hh on loan :P I am 5ft 7

I have ridden horses of that size as a one-off but TBH I wouldn't want to loan one for everyday riding and jumping as I would be a tad over-horsed - I'm only 5ft4 though and most people I know are taller than me. Hopefully you'll find someone soon.

yes thats huge (says owner of 14.2!) how on earth do you get on if you have to get off to do a gate lol

There will be fewer people looking for a big horse like that, just because most people want something around the 16 hh size.
Big horses need bigger riders, more food, larger shoes ( greater cost at farrier)and finally seriously tall transport.
All adds up to more money.
In the present economic climate horses that fall outside normal parameters will be harder to sell.
Just stands to reason.

Hmm I'm not sure that most of that is true actually

He's been ridden very effortlessly by a 13yo friends daughter (jumped 1.10m first time she sat on him!) and by a 7yo boy (just in walk and trot but he controlled him just fine!) I'm 5'7" but not "big" if you get what I mean lol! (my other 2 are 16.1hh)

He doesn't eat much as is a big fatty if left to his own devices

Yes he needs big shoes and a big box but I'm asking £100 per month which I gather is standard for any size horse on loan so I don't see how that would affect anyone's decision.

is it just a sharer you are looking for or to put him out on loan?

Just a sharer - 3 days a week. I've just had a baby and have another gelding that needs to be kept in work (and a mare who is just getting fat at the mo

) so don't have time for all 3 but would like someone to help ride the big guy as I'd like to still ride and compete him , I just can't do all the exercising to make that happen!

For me, yes, because at 5'2 (on tiptoes!) I look a little small heightwise on my 15.3. However, if you emphasise how lovely he is, and maybe say he's 17.2, and you have all transport etc. sorted, and put pics of said 13yo riding him, then people might change their minds!

If only you were down in cornwall!! I so would have snatched that share up! Can never find a big horse down here to share - the one downside to being tall!!

Similar to Jess Pickle - my horse was advertised as smaller than he is.
He too is 18.1hh but was sold as a 17.3hh.
Yes, I do think height puts some people off, odd really as he rides smaller than some 17hh's I tried and not wide at all, people say as soon as someone sits on him he shrinks!
I am only 5'8 and manage him perfectly!
Storminateacup - actually he is alot cheaper than most ponies I know to run - he has NO food all year round, only has fronts on and the farrier doesn't charge any more for having larger shoes, and as for transport, well his previous owner had transported him in trailers! I travel him in a 3.5tonne box with no problem whatsoever.

I like big horses and the size would not put me off. The good thing when riding out with friends and having the biggest horse is that I dont have to do gates very often.

My horse is a 16.3 clydesdale x highland and a very good doer.

Big is beautiful

ha ha you don't! Either hack with someone on a "normal" sized horse or plan routes carefully so as not to encounter gates lol!

I'm 5'9" and his height wouldn't put me off. After I got Hattie, someone else offered me a gentle giant 18hh gelding on loan and I would have taken him too for my OH to ride as well as me, but my stables wouldn't have been big enough for him!

I agree though that not many tall people over here compared to Canada though! When I go into town, I can see across a sea of heads
