I have just started competing on my youngster and have found him slipping a bit on take off..i am thinking that studs may help him , however i have no idea how to fit them etc.. is this something your farrier fits ie hole wise?
Im not sure what exactly they screw into..He has road nails at the moment if that makes a difference as i heard this helps them adjust to studs..Id be really grateful for any advice hints x x

You need to ask your farrier for stud holes. Everyone does this differently and has different views on how many you should have. Personally I only have one on the outside of each hind shoe. I dont have any in front. This happens to suit my horse. Again people have different ways but when studs holes not in use i just stuff them with vasaline and cotton wool to keep any stones etc out.

Supastuds are very good and they also do a good stud guide book as well. The basic rule is use the smallest studs possible to do the job required depending on ground conditions. Usually pointed ones for hard ground and domed ones on soft but it is usually trial and error.

Re the vaseline, I find it a little tricky, you may be fine but I use blanks, (I *think* Mark Todd do some) they come with an alan key and just screw in (they are flush with the shoe) your farrier can stick them in when doing shoes and just replace after shows.

Some people like 2 studs to keep the hoof level and therefore reduce strain on joints, some like one so they can pivot around it (if that makes sense)

I use pointy studs for hard ground, squarer ones for soft.

Good luck!

I too am also looking to use studs next year, can you tell me about the stuffing them with Vaseline & cotton wool... how often do you do this? is it just a case of stuffing the holes then checking them daily when picking out feet?

As soon as you get shoes done, get a nail (nick one off farrier) and get some vaseline/oil and cotton wool and t\stuff holes with as much as you can get in there. Take out before you need them to fit studs (you can hook it out with nail) and then redo it afterwards.

Tbh, I find the blanks easier, but it's personal preference. :D
