my mare who was in full work with me (hacking/jumping/schooling etc) got diagnosed with arthritis, vet said never be able to ride again, but touch wood atm she is getting better and better, hacking out lovely. are their people who would be interested in sharing/loaning such a horse? just to hack?
 
I suppose it would all be down to vets bills, i.e if the mare needed bute then who would pay for it.

Also if the mare is sound, can you guarentee they will just lightly hack her out and not try and push her schooling and jumping wise and undo your hard work to help her get better?

If you find the right person then go for it, you never know how much interest there is out there until you try.

P.s Did you manage to get some clippers for this year ;) After the 3hr late episode of someone..
 
il still pay for her bute dont mind that. someone will always be there so defo noway would any schooling or jumping be occurring.


PS yes i did in feb thank the lord!!! dont know why i paid her :S
 
As a similar cripple I'd be interested in such a deal, we could compare creaky joint stories. :D Wrong part of the country though, hope you can find someone. :)
 
I think so...

One of my fellow liveries is pregnant so is not riding much, but she has found a mature lady (God, hate that expression) who hacks out her horse 5 days a week...and that's all she does. She doesn't care for competing or jumping, she just likes to explore the countryside on horseback. Works for both horse, owner and sharer. So it can be done :)
 
If the mare is a sensible ride and she's not showing any signs of pain, then gentle regular exercise is supposed to be good for horses with arthritis, obviously depending on the serverity of it that is, only you and your vet can be the judge of that.

But if she's field sound (as in happily mobile to walk around, graze and move away from other horses in defence) then there is no reason why walking out on short rides would do her any harm for the time being, if they can't manage that then personally I think it would be unfair to keep a horse alive if they can't cope with the simple things in life...and walking freely is one of them if you see what I mean.

So for someone who enjoys a quiet steady amble around the village, then yes it would probably do her the world of good, I'm sure you'd find someone who enjoys that yet understands your horses condition, they may want to contribute a small amount to the feed etc but I think it would be cheeky to expect someone to pay for her medication etc.

Bob her on some Apple Cider Vinegar as well see if that helps.
 
My stiff old dear has a lovely but nervous little girl come twice a week and just practice her walk and trot. Lottie has taken to cantering off down the long sides with her but as she did it to me the other day I am sure it's not kiddy pushing her too much!! When she exceeds what Lottie can do she will move on but we previously had a lovely at home mom come and ride a few times a week, just hacking and enjoying some quality 'away from house and kids' time. They can't be expected to contribute much financially but it freed me up to ride my younger horses more and still keep her heart healthy and know she gets extra cuddles!!

The only rule with Lottie these days is never miss an opportunity to cuddle or titbit her (I am a very anti titbit person!) as she is 31, has 2 terminal illnesses and should medically have died 18 months ago! I have a very practical old school vet who is happy for her to continue as long as she seems happy and defies medical science!!

So yes, someone would probably love your horse if you do not expect too much in return, a few quid a week, or a day mucking out that one and maybe one other so you don't have to perhaps.
 
i am perfectly happy to keep paying for her medication i just want the mare to be out doing something, she does have the odd good day where i can still school her, she only has been diagnosed with arthritis in her front right knee. she is fine to hack with anything loves being out and about. i am on the hunt for something else to do a bit more with ( got a 2yo whos not much use atm lol) hence wanting someone else to hack her out. shes perfectly sound and very happy as she is. her doing something is more important than the price, just maybe some contribution towards shoes would be good.
 
I think you would find someone. After 4 years of owning a horse that is an awful hack, i'd love a horse just to plod about on. Sure you'll find someone x
