Would these prices be fair?

I'm after a few opinions! :)

I've been considering putting an advert up in local tack shops and such, advertising poo-picking services. I don't mind getting drenched and frozen over the winter clearing turnout, and with limited day light I thought it might appeal to those that want to spend the time they have at the weekends actually riding and getting on with other things.

My question is whether you would consider the following prices fair?

£5p/h for jobs of two hours or more.
£1 per barrow (of any size, would ask YO to supply) for jobs taking less than two hours.

Would be willing to do one off and regular clearances as well as pull ragwort and other tiresome chores when needed.

I'm a little uncertain on whether this is a fair price, particularly as having somebody else poo-pick is hardly an essential service :p Do you think this strikes a fair balance between being affordable, and at the same time, worth me driving down to the yard in question?

I could offer to do other yard duties if needed, having around 15 or so years experience around horses. I've also had a 5 year break as well though, so don't really think it's on to advertise and charge people for more hands on help :o

minimum wage should probs be ur minimum. i think 1 pound a barrow is not going to be enough if you only have to do one barrow and youve driven there
maybe set a minimum price a job say 6 or 7 pounds and then cheaper for more hours

i would charge more then a 1 pound a barrow as i pay myslef more then this by selling my horses poo. i make around 4 or 5 pound an hour

Lol, seems I was being a little too fair on smaller jobs :p

Perhaps £7 a job for anything up to an hour, and min wage for anything that takes longer?

Sheffield area. I was thinking of starting off with just a couple of ads in the local tack shops etc, as there's a few yards around where I am. Then maybe doing a gumtree ad or similar for a wider radius if people are actually interested.

Wish someone offered this near us. I seem to spend most of my life poo picking. Don't mind as like a clean field but just sometimes it would be nice not to have to do it!

£ 1 seems cheap specially if its a big field and you have to walk allot to make that barrow up, could take up to 15 - 20 mins. If a smaller field the barrow fills up quicker. You need to consider that. I would have 2 prices one for larger fields say over 5 acres one for smaller fields where poo will be more concentrated.

I know this as my small field i find most poo in one area big field have to walk or drive tractor backwards and forwards across the field .:)

I was charging £ 4 per time for my livery .

As you will be doing strangers places you have to consider also your time getting there and back and petrol also.

I agree with everyone who says you're not charging enough! An hourly rate would probably be better. You should be charging more than minimum wage as well - we pay our cleaner £10 an hour and she doesnt even do a very good job! (OH is too cowardly to get rid of her and tbh it does save us a bit of work). Gauge it by your possible clients. If it's not such a wealthy area then charge less so you get the business, but if it's wealthier then charge more! I'd feel guilty paying someone £1 a barrow to poo pick, especially if they had to travel to the yard :)

I think you might be suprised how many people might take you up on it, there are an awful lot of people who dont have much time especially with the winter coming and its dark early who would love to have someone to come and do the rubbish jobs for them that we all hate. If there are people who live locally to your home that have horses you could try making some small leaflets or cards and putting them through doors to target the people nearest to you, they may be even more keen if you live near to them. Dont sell yourself short though. You dont want to run yourself ragged for not enough return.
