We have a new rescue dog, been with us two months. Generally doing pretty well. Still young, and needing more training. Twice he has escaped from our field while I was mucking out, as the council has changed the stiles to kissing gates, which the dogs can push open. In the next field there are some builders with a collie, so new dog goes over to play when he gets through the gate. Both times it has been dark, and I didn't see him go, so when I noticed he'd gone I walked round the lanes in the dark shouting his name, quite worriedly! The dog (and builders) were in ea rshot, but dog is in "can't hear you I'm playing" mode. Eventually I notice where he is, and go to retrieve him.

If I hear someone shouting and obviously looking for a lost dog, and its with my dog (happens sometimes) I would shout to them that the dog was over here, instead of letting them trek round worrying.

The second time I got to the dog - and builders - I mentioned this to them, asking them to shout me if he was with them and they could see/hear me looking, and they looked at me like I was crazy, and it wasn't their fault that I couldn't control my dog!

Anyway, rant over! Going out to put acord around the kissing gate that hopefully will keep it shut (until someone leaves it open). Why do dogs run off to places that show you up!

It would annoy me - everyone has surely been there after all, sometimes dog owners need to stick together!

However, I would suggest keeping him on a lead or longline until you can trust his recall a bit more:)

Yes it would annoy me that they didn't let you know your dog was there but I agree with the previous post, if he keeps running off I would keep him tied up or secured some how. I know my dogs play deaf when they are set on something or in heightened play mode!

I'm furious about these kissing gates the council has insisted are put in: the horses can get halfway in-so blooming dangerous.

Lots were installed around here recently but the ones leading into stock fields have a latch on them to keep them closed a certain way - maybe it varies from council to council?

Yes he definately needs more training! He's only gone twice out of many many days, and usually comes back, but now he know he can open the gate, and there's another dog he will no doubt go more! At least I will know where ti look if he does!

Horses haven't been in that field yet - have already asked the council to put a spring on it so it springs shut (Some round here have them) but it hasn't arrived yet.

Anyway, not a serious post really - just needed a rant when I came back. Thanks for listening!
