I can't see the issue here GW. Many folk on here buy horses without vetting and have no issues, OP has been unlucky. The insurance process has surfaced the issues and the seller has been good enough to offer to take the horse back. Again these things happen on here. Felt to me like op was just seeing if there was a deal to be done in which case seller will either be interested or not. People do make cheeky offers, I've just been offered a quarter of the price for one of mine.

I was explaining what was going on to the folk that could not understand the post - as the LOU poster had really confused the issue

No.... if you look at the mid part of the thread you could see it going well off track - when they were saying the OP was a cheeky mare as she had claimed LOU and was now sending same horse back for a full refund or to keep for a full refund less a grand - and it was heading toward a right blood bath :D
 
I'm not sure I could bring myself to buy a horse with DJD for any amount of money. Aside from the cost of trying to medicate it, the heartbreak of watching my horse go downhill and get in increasing amounts of pain would tear me apart. I'd have to take the selfish decision to walk away.

Saying that, if I could keep the horse until the pain got unmanageable and then I could put it to sleep, I might be tempted to do that over not knowing what sort of future it might have.

It's difficult to say without knowing the extent of the DJD and the extent of the restriction it's likely to place on his future activities. What I would say is have an open, honest chat with the dealer. I think they've been really good to offer to take the horse back after four months, I know many dealers that wouldn't have a horse back after four minutes so good on them for that! I would have a long chat with them, explain that you wanted the horse to showjump but the x-rays show he isn't going to be able to cope with that and get a statement from your vet advising what level of activity he will be able to do - for example if you bought him to do local showjumping and he'll be ok to do local dressage then I think £1000 would be low, if you bought him to affiliate showjumping and he's going to be a happy hacker at best then it may be high so it'll depend on the levels you're talking about. Ask the dealer what they plan to do with the horse - if re-advertising ask them the price and take it from there. It may be that if they were only going to advertise him for £1500 they'd rather give you the difference as a refund and let you keep the horse to save them the hassle of him coming back, costing them money for stabling, feeding etc... plus the cost of re-advertising and hassle of new people trying him, vettings etc... In short, have a chat, be honest and see what they say!
