I know this should prob be in Dog bit, but more peeps come in here!

Do you think it would be cruel to go and get my dog at lunch time (1pm) and bring him back to work with me and for him to stay in the car till I finish (5pm) There would be water in the car for him and a window would be open.

He only sleeps on the sofa all day at home, so he would be doing the same, just int he car (which is massive by the way)

So what do you all think? Would this be abit cruel?

No, cant come in the office.

whats the point in having him in the car if he would just do as he would normally at home? I wouldn't do that

Coz then he can come up the yard with me after work.
I cant go and get him after work, coz the traffic is so bad.

I don't think it would hurt him, but it might be a bit upsetting for him. Does he happily snooze in the car normally? Are you taking him somewhere straight after work?

I dont think it would both him at all, he sleeps in the car all the time!

I'd do it as a one off - but are you talking about doing it on a regular basis? Even if he's got water, when the weather warms up cars get really hot - I wouldn't use it as a long term solution.

If he's happy in the car, I think it would be fine. At this time of year when it's not hot the car wouldn't be too warm - wouldn't do it in the Summer though.

No I dont think it would be, I used to take my dog with me for that length of time when I was at work as he was much happier asleep in the car because if I left him at home it would really stress and bark and whine until I got back

so I thought it would be better for him to be happy in the car and he survived! He loves the car as well!

Just be prepared for people at work saying oo, some1's left they're dog in the car in the car park (or customers saying that)-depending on where you work obv!!

personally i wouldn't, as well as the possiblity of him gettin upset, u have to remember there are people out there who would happily break into a car and steal a dog when unsupervised, which is happening all to frequently

If he's happy enough to sleep in the car, he'll be fine. My dog loves sitting in the car, if I leave the boot open and he's outside he'll jump in and stay in there for hours. My hubby sometimes has to take him in on night shift and he'll be in the car up to 8 hrs. He gets let out and for a run every hour or so. It may sound a bit mean but he much prefers it to sitting on his own at home for hours at a time.

Yes it's cruel.

Why?

If you think how much a car can heat up even while sitting in the shade on a mild day would you want to be sitting in it? So many dogs have died in this manner as people don't realise how much a car can heat up.
Isn't your dog a Scottie? I'm assuming you're talking about the little cutie in your sig so he'll have a heavy coat to begin with and will feel any heat quickly.

I'm sorry I just really think it's a bad idea. Chances are someone would actually report you as well.

Well, My farriers dogs used to live in the car... even overnight, they seemed happy enough. Saddle fitters dogs are usually in the car all day....
I wouldnt personally with mine. It gets really hot even with a window ajar.
Someone may call the RSPCA - and the RSPCA doesnt like dogs being in cars for very long!

My dogs come to work with me and because of that they get more exercise than they would if I left them at home, they get out in the morning at the yard, come to work and they are out again before I go to the office, out again at lunchtime then again mid afternoon and home with me to the yard. IN good weather they are on ropes outside the car with access to their beds ( I work on a college farm) and in bad weather I can either put them in the car or in extremes they can go into one of the sheds here. It's ideal for me and I understand I have exceptional circumstances but a lot of folk I work with bring their dogs and they stay in cars a lot of the day without problems, so long as it is secure it's safe. If I had to park on the street or in a busy car park I wouldn't do it but I prefer this to leaving them at home.

Actually MW, the more I think about it the more I think it's a rotten thing to do

I wouldn't like to be sat in the car all day. You'd need to leave a window open, which compromises the safety of your care. You're bound to come across some idiot who would delight in teasing him through the window. And I'm sure, if given the choice, the dog would prefer to stay in the house - where he can walk around if he chooses.

And your likely to get reported to the RSPCA - I know I would.

What benefit is it to actually take your dog to the yard anyway? More sitting in the car whilst you do and ride your horse???

No, I would leave him at home, and enjoy a lovely walk with him after you've finished the horse.

I'd leave him at home.
My dog used to be on his own when I went to work......and used to sleep either on the settee or my bed...(never his own bed) and was fine...lived to be 15.

Think he'd be much better off at home, walking bout and doing what he wanted rather than being cooped up in a car.....and when the weather starts to get warmer it's going to be too hot in the car for him with the window open or not.

Have to say my dog loves going to the yard if only to sit in the car (cool weather only or occassionally if somebody sits with her with the AC on and the door open), but I wouldn't upset his routine if I were you. He's probably quite happy at home all day. If you just take him out odd days he won't know what to expect/could get stressed.

Also if he got in the habit of going in the afternoon he'd be upset when the weather hots up and he can't go with you. At least at the moment he can potter around at will in the comfort of his own home.

Also if he wants to sick up, as my dog has just done

, it will be all over your car as he'll have no where else to go.

A lot depends on the dog and the car. My aunt's spaniel used to travel all round the country with her and regarded her car as an extension of home. It would quite happily snooze for hours while she went to weddings, had dinner etc. My dog sleeps all day and would probably be more than happy to do it in a car with new things to look at. If your dog is the edgy type though it might find it a bit stressful having to keep barking, so it depends on where it will be parked. Loads of dogs which are on holiday with their owners spend hours in a car, and dogs at shows spend endless hours in crates, so I cannot understand why anyone would think it is cruel.

One of my work colleagues used to do it, she was reported to the RSPCA and got a warning, work told her she couldn't do it any more after that as they didn't want to be seen with RSPCA vehicles on the premises.
I personally wouldn't do it either.

Depends on the dog, mine loves the car and jumps in as soon as the door's open. She used to come to work with me (I work at home now) and would stay in the car all day apart from coffee breaks and lunch times when I'd take her for a walk. She comes up to the horses with me before and after work and runs around.

However, where I work(ed) is in the middle of nowhere, has plenty of shade to park under and place to walk and is safe enough to leave all windows open. I can promise you it was never too hot in the car!!! Loads of us take our dogs to work there and there's never been any problems....

She's loved the car since 8 weeks old and is now 3....

Ok some of us are being a little anthropromorphic however, you would need to consider adequate ventilation/water supply and space (all of which you have already covered) and whether he is safe in the vehicle. You could get a car cage - big one - then you can leave the back of your car open if its safe/secure. Make sure you secure the cage too. If you happy all thats covered then I wouldn't have a problem at this time of year....would not do it myself in middle of summer.

evenag114 - I speak from experience, Zoology (hons) BSc/BIPDT (dog training) and breeder of border collies - just in case any one wondered

I don't think it is something I would do, mainly because I would worry about the security of my dog, and it might not like all the passer's by etc if not used to that kind of thing. Do you think it might not want the toilet during those 4 hrs?
I am not sure if I would go so far as to say it is 'cruel' but I think I'd not want to go down this route myself.

Does my dog have an exceptional bladder? She goes when she is out on her morning walk, then not again until the evening. I am at home with her so she can go if she wants to, she just doesn't need to. Four hours would be no problem to her.

I don't know if that is exceptional or not?? I have to say though, (this may be too much information) I find that I can easily go from 9am to 5pm without needing the loo!! Me thinks it's time I drank some water!
