Would this be cruel?

Ah, I think I make up for you! I am more like a scent-marking dog, in that I have to go every hour or so!

Would it be cruel to leave a dog at home all day while you were at work? I only ask as I would love a little dog but cant take it to work for its own safety and I dont have a garden otherwise I wouldnt mind having a kennel and run..

So should I wait till I can afford somewhere with a garden?

sorry to but in on your post

I don't see a problem if he is happy to be in there and settled - so long as he has air and the car isn't in the sun then go for it. Obviously it isn't something I would recommend once it gets any hotter!

Would think it would be ok if a one off and if your dog doesn't mind sleeping in the car!

Just don't do what my OH did and lock the dog and car keys in said car! Had to get the AA out for that one

It depends on where you live (ie access to outside space), what hours you work, whether you would have to house train the dog etc. I have to say it does sound as if your set up is far from ideal for owning a dog - could you employ someone to walk the dog in the middle of the day? Not having a garden is going to be quite inconvenient as every time it needs to go out, you are going to have to put it on a lead and take it.

That was my thinking too Sooty, I would have been looking for an older dog not a puppy but you are right I should wait till I can afford a place with a garden. I work 8-5.30 and I dont know about dog walkers in the area, it would just be lovely to have a little hairy person to go for walks/ runs with and to cuddle up with on the sofa

Sounds fine to me. Put a few toys in there, a basket and some water. Try it once and if he gets very stressed don't do it again!

It's not like you're causing him physical pain.

I don't think not having a garden is a problem as such if you are prepared to take it out several times a day. My uncle lives in a flat in central London and has had dogs for years; the London parks are full of town dogs who are perfectly happy and well cared for. But he is retired, and has plenty of time to devote to his beloved mutt! What about a rescue greyhound? They need very little exercise, and can rarely be let off the lead, but you may have to housetrain it. They are a lot more fragile and a lot more sleepy than a lot of people realise.

I would love a rescue Greyhound but I only have a teensy house I was thinking along the lines of an older Border terrier but with the hours I work I really dont think it would be fair

I have to think of potential dogs welfare and no it wouldnt be fair on any dog so I shall wait as I wouldn't want a sad doggy

Anything but a collie! They don't get old, they really always need so much exercise. Don't be fooled into thinking smaller dog = less exercise; some of the larger breeds need far less than some terriers. A garden would be easier for you but is not necessarily essential for the dog.
