I have a field with stables attached. There is no natural shelter in the field. Would it be dangerous to leave the stable doors open and allow the horses free access to the stables? The stables are attached to the field but are separately fenced so that the horses would need to come through the gateway and across a small concrete yard. Opinions please.

i leave my stable doors open all the time so they have free access to them ,only difference with mine is that they are in the field, not concrete or fencing.
ive never had any problems, and regularly find 2 in one stable

Yeah, that's not a problem, I used to do that. Just make sure the doors are secured open so they can't 'blow' shut.

As long as your horses would get on if all squashed in the same stable, and the doors are fixed open (to stop them blowing halfway in the wind), then you should be fine.

Forgot to say, there are three horses and only two stables. All are large cobs - will that make a difference? I'm worried about them getting caught in the doorways

As long as they all get on fine, we have a 12x24 field shelter with a 12ft door way and two out of our 4 horses dont get on, and sometimes it doesnt look as if a 12ft door way is big enough when shes desperate to get out before the boss comes in! Otherwise I wouldn't worry, plenty of people do in near me.
