Would this be harsh?

The jumps at my yard are all rottng & falling apart..All were hand made so also very heavy. My dad got a bonus over easter so gave us all some money..I also have quite a lot of savings so have decided to buy some jumps.

Just been on the polyjumps webby and seleted the blocks/wings/poles ect which I want..and its quite expensive, but ok I can afford that. I've also been making soem fillers as we don't have any.

Now..I can't afford to replace them if someone breaks them.

Would it be harsh to write a note saying people can use my jumps, but if I find something broken, if no one comes forward and replaced it I won't let anyone use them unless I'm there.

I don't want to seem mean..and that way they'll get a chance.

Sounds fair to me - after all it's only good manners to replace anything you break/damage.

That's what we do. I can use the jumps for free but if I break/damage any I have to replace them. Which is fair.

my friend did the same on her yard and she put a notice up and asked if people would like to borrow her jumps please do and a donation of 50p every week would be appreciated. everyone chipped in and she bought more.

I think that's fair.
My friend has a couple and someone on the yard smashed the plastic on one of the poles and didn't own up to it, we think we know who it was because they made a big fuss about it not being them and we know their horse isn't a jumper and smashes poles like they're going out of fashion. We don't let people use our stuff any more (I have some gymkhana poles).

Very fair. Pin up the price list, too, so people appreciate what your pa has very generously done and so take care of the fences accordingly. It may also inspire a contribution to a new fence/water tray/planks etc

not mean at all.......sensible actually, i have got to the point where i would lock them up when i'm not around!!

It is very kind of you to let others use your jumps, and only fair that if someone damages one they pay to replace it (or actually replace it like-for-like)

Have you looked at Jump 4 Joy jumps? We found them nicer than the Polyjumps.

On our yard we banned anyone from jumping the gate unless they could jump 3 ft and also they weren't allowed to use the plastic poles as trotting poles, there were enough manky wood ones around for that.

Sounds fair to me, I had a set of fairly old wooden jumps, bit manky but still serviceable, & allowed the others at my yard to use them. One girl who is a total b*** DRAGGED the wings across the ground & broke the feet off some of them, which then caused the upright wooden bits to split & break, she did not offer to help repair them, merely pointed out that "they were on the way out anyway" WTF!!! Hubby & I were then at the yard till 9.30pm one night trying to fix them as best we could so that I had something to use. My dad then made some more wings, I got some off e-bay along with another lady from the yard, we put a notice up telling everyone that the new jumps were ours & asking people to either contribute with some more jumps, or with money towards the cost, the mother of the b*** who broke the old ones proceeded to tell me it wasn't worth them joining in as she didn't jump, fair enough till a few weeks later, there she was flying round MY jumps, oh, & going round & round & round in the soaking wet field where MY dressage boards & markers were, churning it all up, so guess what?? Farmer says no grass arena this year, sorry rant over!!
