Following on from my previous posts about xc jumps at home, have been thinking about what I have got.

I am intending to rig up some jumps on Saturday, and have a go.

I was thinking of using a blue barral as a jump, and then some plastic ducting in a pyramid. Now I know these jumps need securing somehow, and I have been thinking what I have got, and what would work?

I have a load of electric fencing stakes, and I wondered if i sandwiched the barral between four of them, it wouldnt be going very far.

I was also going to bolt/tie two bits of ducting together at the bottom, and then just put one bit on top, so it gives way if necessary. I was also going to try sandwiching these between the stakes as well.

They are not very high, and if horse goes over them, he will go clear over them (it is only very, very rare that he touches a jump)

It sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Could you not find some tree branches that are looking like they need a purpose and use them instead?

I/m not sure about the fencing posts either, what about wooden pegs, like the old fashioned one you used to get for tents or similar banged into the ground.

Or you could fashion wooden wedges and slip them underneath like a doorstop

when setting up barrells for jumps, we normally just lay a pole along the front and back of the barrells to stop them rolling, if your poles are heavy enough, this will probably work for your pipes too.

not at all, just roll them in nice and snug to stop everything else rolling out of place. it would only create a false ground line if they were placed in underneath a suspended object further back than the front i.e

_>____.O._____ is ok

_>____*. _________ would not be ok.

_>___.* _________would be ok

does that make sense?

I've got a few blue barrel jumps at the moment - when the barrels are lying flat on the floor I have a heavy pole either side of them to stop them going flying if horse hits them. I also have 4 barrels standing up as a jump again with poles either side of their bottoms. I then put a pole on the top of the barrels so if he hits them, the pole goes flying not the barrels.

If you want to make some good sturdy xc fences, go and find some old telegraph poles. They are brilliant, very sturdy etc. You can secure these to the ground by putting one on top of each other and each end slotted in between 2 fence posts. The fence posts ends will be dug into the ground and, if needs be, use some rope to secure all poles/posts together.

Be careful with some plastic ducting, etc as it can shatter into very sharp bits.
To stop barrells rolling etc, use wooden poles, or make some sandbags.
'Blocks' are super, if yo can get hold of some

The stakes do sound like a disaster, to be honest. I do have a friend who lost an eye jumping, when one of the old style holders damaged it so badly it needed to be removed. Stakes have the potential to cause even more damage, to you AND horsey! Take no chances.
