I am on DIY/Assisted livery, anyway on a sunday i have a lie in as otherhalf works away and we only get weekends together at the moment, so on a sunday i dont go up to muck out etc till about 2.30, however horse is always fed breakie and turned out on the morning, anyway arrived yesterday afternoon to discover horse in at 2.30... i thought this was a bit strange as she normally comes in about 4ish, anyway it turns out that because of bad weather they were all kept in yesterday, anyway my poor horse had been standing in her stinky bed all day

and had only been given 3 slices of hay.. i thought at least YO could have called me to say they are in today do you want to come up a bit earlier.. I know they were doing the right thing as weather was horrible, but it would have been nice to know so at least my neddy would have had a nice clean bed and lots of hay to eat..

Is a phone call to much to ask for or am i just being silly aboaut this?

A phone call would have been nice. Horse sounds as if it had plenty of hay though.

It's why I always do my own horse though - you just can't trust people to do it right....

I agree with this. If there is ever a time when i cant get down i will call one of the girls (friends) to do him for me. They will always send me a txt or give me a call if theres any problems!

no I think that DIY means just that - do it yourself !!!

so if you want a lie in - tough - you must know that at some times the weather will be bloody awful - e.g. sheet ice/snow - and the horses will stay in

why should the YO run up her phone bill calling you.

your horse was fed and watered - if it was knee deep in [****] that is down to you not being there in the morning

I also have an OH I only see most weekends - but the animals still have to be done and I don't get to laze around in bed until noon

if your sundays are that important then ask for full livery on sundays instead until your OH is free more other times.

NOT YO responsiblity

I don't think its that bad really - may have been best if you had rung up to check that everything was OK given weather pretty horrendous and be thankful they had chucked the hay in really. It was probably best horse was in than standing out on its lonesome.

OMG! if i wanted an insult Reynold..

I was only asking an opinion, not that its any of your business as to what i do with my spare time. however My horse is only assisted livery on a sunday, i am up at 6am every day of the week and work full time and have a house to run, a husband and child, my horse was not and NEVER has been knee deep in *sh..t* as you put it! my horse always comes first and this is the only day i ask for a little help (that i have to pay for) and i was only asking a general opinon. I HAVE NEVER HAD THE CHANCE IN THE PAST 10 YEARS OR SO TO LAZE AROUND AS YOU PUT IT! i guess as a horse owner i should not ask or pay anyone to turn my horse out for me ever again!! Quick call the RSPCA ....
Geees! some people on this forum dont realise how nasty their comments really are! IMHO i thought this was just asking for opinions advice about horse matters etc.. if i wanted a lecture on my life and how i would run it i wouldnt ask on a forum, So THANK YOU for your insults and input!

Surely the bed couldn't be THAT bad after only an extra couple of hours? I'm afraid I agree that it is not the YO's responsibilty to let you know, if they are always kept in when it it bad weather then you should have known. As long as they gave the horse hay and water no problem

Thanks Nosey,

I was gratefull that she was given hay, just a bit put out about no phonecall as i always come up around the same time on a sunday, I know no harm was done, and she was quite happy when i went to see her, was just wondering if it was pc to call etc.. thanks.

I don't think that anyone has meant to offend you.

But whilst I wholeheartedly agree that everyone deserves a lie in and a rest day - didn't it occur to you that maybe she would have been left in if the weather was that foul??

Either way - no damage was done. Horse was given hay, was warm and dry. And it won't have hurt to have a dirty stable for a couple of hours.

well where i live the weather wasnt bad, a little windy but no rain etc.. When i got to the yard the weather was totally different..

its not really for a lie in, its more of a chance to spend a little time with my husband/daughter as we only get to see each other as a family on a sunday for a few hours aweek as he works away atm.

as i said i really only posted this as a query.. its not a major issue or nothing. Was just wondereing what happens at other yards..

Think i will remain a watcher from now on rather than a poster.. dont want to offend anyone else

Don't be daft - we often disagree/agree with each other.

People see things in different ways that's all. What you may do in a situation I may not and visa versa.

I agree also , Unfortunately up to you, not really the YO's responsiblity .....If you see that the weather is bad outside you should really know that the horses wont be going out(if thats the way the livery yard is run) .

How much hay do you normally feed your horse ? I think 3 sections of hay was plenty , Im sure he/she wasnt or isnt going to starve until you get out and as you say horses stable is cleaned , a few hours isnt going to make much difference .

When you post on here you get different opinions , good or bad .... Just take them with a pinch of salt ... You dont have to read what everyone posts ... Its entirely up to you , although some posts can seem "to the point" ....Its not meant rude or set out to hurt or offend you xx

Don't be put off!!

Ignore the rudeness of that one person..there was absolutely no need for it IMO..

I too would have been a bit miffed but as others have said..no real harm done.

Mine live out in 15+ acres and still stand around in their poo area.lol...

if you read it I stated that *I* don't get to laze around until noon (wish I did sometimes)

there are plenty of posts on here about people who want the cheaper costs and/or the more hands on approach of having their horses on DIY - but the words speak for themselves - do it yourself

i'm 25 years into DIY and I DO d. i. myself - everyday including Xmas day and I don't get time off (even for good behaviour ;-) )

However a phone call is a business cost and whilst phoing you might be nice - what about the YOs phone bill to phone every single livery and tell them every time that the horses weren't being turned out

tbh with the weather yesterday I'd have been pleased to find mine not turned out !!

hmm.. however considering i am the only DIY/Assisted on the yard and her OH works for phone company and gets free calls i can see how this would be detremental to her business. (and come to think of it there was supposed to be a dressage on yesterday but it got cancelled because of the weather and she managed to call everyone back regarding that.. ) oh well.. but as i have said repeatidly (oops cant spell) i was only asking as to what is the norm re this situation..

Thanks for the input guys appreciated.

Your horse is fine...had hay and water....your family is fine...what is the problem?
Life is too short to worry about the finer niceties of horsekeeping - forget it and enjoy your horse.

BC I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill TBH and seeing a slight when none might have been intended..

Have you ever thought that your YO knows your routine on a Sunday is not to go to the yard until 2.30 so she didn't want to disturb you needlessly and either she (or someone else) kindly gave your horse enough hay/water to last it until you got up there. I would have called that thoughtful as they needn't have given it anything at all (but if they had done nothing, then I would have appreciated a call so I could rectify things).

The simple solution is to ask that your assisted livery on Sunday includes feeding & turnout, or if the weather is bad and horse has to be kept in - it includes feeding, watering, hay and skipping out. Easy answer!

I probably wouldn't have expected a phone call, just would make sure it didn't happen again.

I think reynold was just straight talking so dont take it as a personal attack. As others have said the horse is fine and in your circumstances no I wouldn't have expected a phone call. I think jinglejangle's idea is a good one in case this happens again

ok i think everyone has missread or i have typed my question wrongly.. so i appologise, i was only asking as to what is the norm.. ie do people get calls etc.. i appreciate everything my YO does for me and more and she has been told so on many occasions and even been given cards/gifts of thanks.. I was only asking this out of curiosity nothing more. IMO i thought it was strange not to get a call, I wasnt particulary bothered as horse likes to stay in. (strange animal) It was more of I would have come up and given her hay and cleaned her out etc as this i feel would have been easier and did not want to put anyone out having to do hay etc.... I was not saying that i was really annoyed etc.. but obviously i have typed this in the wrong way.. sorry if it had offended anyone..

I don't think Reynold meant to offend you, or be rude. My initial reaction to your OP would have been basically the same, but then your horse isnt exactly going to keel over from standing in for one morning. It wasnt YO's fault it was wet and windy, and perhaps YO had better things to do than phone you and tell you to get up? Your horse was hayed and (I presume) had water, and was warm, so can't see the problem?

Well, if it helps, I always get a call or txt if there has been a change to the routine. But ours are turned out 365 days of the year, rugged up and turned out, where they then bounce, run about and then eat grass (or hay if it's that time of year). I think IF we had your situation the horses would be given hay, have their water checked, then the owners would get a txt telling them what had been done - in case they wanted to change their plans as a result.

tinypony my thoughts exactly ..well said , it how i would expect things to happen at my yard where assisted diy is offered , our yo offers a turn out service at weekends etc and i would certainly be upset if she didnt inform me of any change to what i have paid and contracted her to do , its no different than anything else i pay her for ,if i ask and pay for bale of hay i expect a bale of hay to arrive lol
as for time off on a sunday to spend with family children etc , well thats just a caring wife mother arranging that all her family, horse included get to spend time together, reynold i for one found your comments offensive

when I was on assisted DIY i used to get a call if mine was left in but that was only because he would go nuts and set the others off!! Not quite sure when my last lie in was, but in same situation, mine get thrown some haylage and topped up with water, they arent going to die through not being skipped out for a few hours.

If that happened to my horse I would be furious! You had an agreement that YO would turn horse out, and instead it was left standing in a minging bed all day! I would expect a text at least first thing in the morning to let me know that the horses weren't going out (which I wouldn't be able to stand

). This is why I can't let anyone else do my horse, I'm horribly over-protective
