Just been to look at a pony for my son, it is sec A must be cross something spotty as it has the spotty lips and pale skin around her eyes. She looked so gorgeous as she walked up to us but the pink skin and spottiness around her eyes put me off. Would it put you off or am i being silly? She was otherwise really sweet but i just thought her eyes were a little ugly and that it was such a shame! Your thoughts please, Thanks.

I wouldn't not buy a horse because of what their marking look like (unless I was planning on seriously showing them), so I'd go for it, I don't see a reason to let that put you off, unless you really object!

Does this pony do exactly what you want? Is it perfect for your son?

If the answer is "Yes" then no, it wouldn't put me off. You need a pony to do a job, and if it does that job well, it's a no brainer!

When I look back and remember my favourite riding school ponies I used to ride as a kid, it isn't the pretty ones I remember fondly, its the ones I had the most fun on.

If she's just right for your son, he won't care what she looks like, and nor should you

No. If the pony was safe and suitable then i wouldnt care what it looked like. Sorry, but youre being silly! Looks are so low on the list of my requirements for a childs pony they dont even make the list. What it looks like isnt going to affect how your son rides nor keep him safe. The ponys way of going, training and temperament are important. Good looks are a bonus, not a necessity.

go for it! You obv want to get a horse you like the look of, but if she's perfect in every other way, like all the others have said, safety should always be top priority.

you will prob have to invest in some suncream for those pale patches!

My daughter's loan Welshie has one wall eye and lots of pink skin on her face especially round one eye, means you have to slap on the suncream, and she's not to everyone's taste as she also has a total blank expression on the wall eye side which she uses to great effect when she nips or nibbles me from that side then pretends she's not moved her lips which is hilarious, but we think she's pretty and very adorable.

Personally I'd go manners and ability over appearance any day, especially for a first pony. Can your son catch her, how does she behave when groomed, feet lifted, tacked up etc, does she stand and wait while your son fiddles with opening the gate or does she barge past and try to head for the grass? Is she easy to ride and well schooled and well behaved or does she try evasion tactics such as to stick her head down and grab the reins off your son - this can be trained out with an older stronger rider as we discovered!

She was the pony for the grandchildren and they haven't ridden her for over ten months so he can't ride her. He has no tack for her anymore either as they gave it away to someone. They are quite old and seem very sweet and genuine people. The pony is cheap so it would be a gamble anyway.

If I was going on looks alone, then I am with you.... I would like the pony to be pretty.... or at least not ugly!!

BUT I would not discount an less attractive pony if it ticked all of the safety boxes.

Pink skin for me though, is a bit of a no no!!! Too much hassle with suncream etc.

Merlins pink nose is a big enough problem for me

My old pony was like that, she had no eyelashes either. And as she was an Appy no mane or tail to speak off. In fact until she got to about 20 she really was one of the ugliest pony's I have ever seen. But do you know, she was the best pony ever, I learnt so much on her, so did my daughter from riding her at 2 - to winning loads of trophies for young handler to the age of 15. She was fab at handy pony and gymkhana classes and as she got older we won every veteran class going cos she looked fab for her age. Wouldn't have swapped her for the world.

To be honest when it comes to children's ponies the last thing you need to worry about is how pretty or not it is!

The most important thing is the horse's suitablity as a child's pony - is it quiet with children to handle and to ride?
