I have a stable empty and I am looking for a livery, everything about the yard is 4* - it really is great - menage, lots of grass, american barn, rubber matting etc. The only thing is - I can't let the livery have a straw bed.

Would this really put you off?

Thanks
Emma

No. Not at all. I hate straw beds. I have never had any problems attracting liveries and I only allow megazorb or wood pellets.

I would prefer straw but if everything else about the place appealed to me, I'd go onto shavings and come! That is unless for any reason my horse couldn't have shavings. It's been a while since I bought straw but my friend pays about £6.50 for a bale of shavings so I don't know how this compares with the price of straw? Some people prefer shavings to straw anyway.

Just out of interest, why can't you use straw?

Thanks all so far, encouraging that nobody has ruled it out completely. I do think that there are less people sticking to straw now. No straw is a stipulation by the yard owner who I am sole leasing from. The muck trailer is quite small and I guess straw leads to having to empty it much more often and having a much bigger muck heap as an end result!

Now I just have to find someone to come and share this little piece of heaven with me!

Would not put me off at all. I accept as a livery, the yard manager has their rules and their way of doing things and as long as they are up front with how they want things done, all well and good.

Now, where can I park my trailer? :)

Oh no.. I have to say- love to see a straw bed.
Would never have one! Pain in the arse to muck out- the pee lies and stinks, so the answer is-- Why do you not live closer!! Yes I would most certainly come to your yard :D

Ok, so who's up for selling up and moving then? Bring your pellets, shavings and paper beds with you! :D

How's this for coincidence! The girl who was coming to look at my stable this afternoon actually went and viewed my old stable at my other yard and snapped it up this morning! So she has called to say she won't be visiting. If only she knew what awaited her this afternoon!

Wouldn't put me off but straw is getting a bad rap here. Mine are easy to keep clean and that's with big high sides and a good deep bed. So no issues with stink and lying pee. Fresh bedding is added daily. Big Heston bales last 6 horses one week which is 20 euro. Giving each horse only one bag of shavings per week is 48 euros. And I have some that need more than one. Shavings for me are a pain to keep clean and unless new stuff goes in daily they get that muck color. And as for the muckpit, I was on shavings for a year before switching back. The pit is going to be smaller when we have it taken away than when we were all on shavings. We keep it pushed back and it decomps faster than the shavings ever did.

No it would not put me off but there is much to like about straw too.

Yes to be honest it would put me off. I have tried lots of different types of bedding but much prefer Straw. Its much cheaper and my muck heap its much smaller since having straw as i deep litter. Horse didnt like to lie down on anything but straw.

Nope it would most certainly not put me off either.

The only time I use straw is when the broodies are foaling and I HATE it, the muckheap grows to four times it's normal size and it is much harder work, not helped no doubt, by having foals in there, it also takes longer to muck out than my normal chopped rape straw beds.

Really I'm mucked out in about 5-
10 minutes with straw and because I deep litter I only take the muck of rather than the wet so my muck heap isn't that big. It rots down Quickly anddoesn't smell

After many experiments, I have discovered my mare & her bed are both far cleaner on straw, so if i'm honest if their was only the bedding issue between yours & another yard I'd choose the other. However I've found no matter how perfect a yard is there's always at least 1 thing that doesn't match your idea of perfect, so I'd still definitely consider it, unless you build your own its all about compromise.

Thanks for your input everyone!

I am hoping that it won't be too much of a clanger when people come to look round and if you guys are anything to go by it should go in my favour!

I have just mucked out a friend's straw bed at another yard and I remember why I changed from straw! it seemed to take ages and I STINK!

Don't tell my husband that I am now sitting at his Mac computer without having washed my hands!!

Happy Spring!
