thinking about getting a dog as have always wanted one and am now more or less in a position to be able to have one. My only issue is the fact that at present i live with my parents (with any luck this should change in the next year or so) and my dad is adamant that he does not want a dog in the house when im not there but it could live in the shed. Shed is more a summerhouse than anything or i could get a kennel for it. Would be having either a lab or a retriever. do you think that this set up could work or is it unfair on the dog?
 
If you are talking puppy (no) unless you have time to get home and do some training, even a older rescue not used to being a kennel and run (you need a run) would not be fair unless you take time to introduce kennel slowly, that could take weeks (otherwise you could possibly have a very vocal dog) outside that dad won't be very happy with.
Going for a dog thats used to being outdoors could work but then obs you want it in of a night so house trained too.
I would probably wait till you have a home, esp if your dad is not to keen.
