Dog is totally 100% himself in every way. Eating drinking, playing, same out walking etc

I noticed a while ago, not really sure when but the skin on his tummy is paler (gums are the same)
This didn’t worry me more than I thought it a bit weird
Today I noticed he has lost weight recently for no real reason.
He didn’t need to loose any and you wouldn’t notice except he was lying on his side asleep and looked a bit tucked in. Then I noticed his ribs were more feelable- not visible but he has dropped off for sure.
I did switch food recently, only a week ago. The same food but I’d thought different flavour. However reading the packet it’s only 53% meat and it’s turkey rather than 60 odd percentage salmon so I assume less calories. He is VERY active.
Would you/should I be at all concerned?

I probably wouldn’t have been concerned in the past but since losing my dog very suddenly to a suspected ruptured tumour last year I’ve gone more in the direction of getting any changes checked out, however innocuous they seem.

Over only a few days our dog went from seemingly fine to us wondering if he wasn’t quite right to taking him into the vets and having to make the decision for him there and then. Looking back there were some signs but none of them seemed that significant in themselves and all of them had an explanation. One was that he had lost weight but I’d switched him to light dog food after him gaining a little over winter so I just thought it was that.

In your case the weight loss might be related to the change of food but from what you say it might have preceded that. Hopefully it is nothing and your dog has just burned off lots of energy with being so active. Having been through what we went through though, I think I’d get it checked out now, if only for the peace of mind.

I agree with HelenBack having also had the same experience with our beautiful 6 year old lab. Just not quite right for a week or so, took to the vet at day 10, on the operating table day 11, Inoperable and PTS while still under anesthesia.

If either of our dogs look slightly off even after just 48 hours I take them to the vet just in case. My vet obviously understands and is always happy to reassure us or treat if necessary.

I am sure you will just get a nice reassuring vet visit and hopefully nothing more than a change of diet and a lot of activity going on. I will cross everything for good news.

I would take him to the vet too. We lost a 6 yr old Rott very suddenly to a tumour, looking back there had been signs that we missed. I also lost an elderly Lab to a burst pancreatic tumour, she had lost weight over a few months but hadn't shown any other signs.
Fingers crossed it's just the change of food, in your case.

I’d look at the calories on the food, as much as the ingredients. Scout always looks like a hat rack but when we were having major stupid behaviour in January I thought why feed him the rocket fuel and started giving him the Skinners crud my OH had bought the beagle. In two days he looked dreadful. He’s a high energy Duracell bunny type character.

So yes for peace of mind I’d maybe get some bloods run but don’t panic.

I’ve not actually looked at the bag really as I literally noticed today when he flopped asleep
I’m front of me.
I emptied the bag as usual into a tin. It was only that I was a bit miffed at the obvious lesser quality with the % meat on the front. I’d assumed it would be the same quality food just a different flavour

Ours was just very quiet and started to look a little tucked up but started being a little sick on and off, eventually not eating much either. In her case half of her stomach had literally disintegrated from meds she had been put on for hip and elbow dysplasia pain. There was not enough stomach left to operate so sadly there was no alternative. I am sure you will have happier news.

Bear literally wasn’t as active as usual on a walk, perfectly fine and as usual at home, then a few days later, he was crazy swollen, straight to the vet and pts there and then after an examination. His spleen was compromised and there were adhesions. Call me paranoid, but I’d have even minor stuff checked. I hope your boy is ok. 🥰

Just to balance this a bit, a week ago I looked at Cooper and thought, hmm, your a bit chubby. I looked at him today and he's slightly too thin. Obvs its more noticeable in sighthounds, but his weight varies a fair amount and its usually related to exercise or too many extras. Hopefully its just similar with yours and the vet puts your mind at rest.
