Would you ask for a refund under these circumstances?

No not asking for money back already paid. But most yards dont then charge a months notice after horse put to sleep. Most yards keep the rest of the current month already paid but dont then charge notice on the next month due, irrespective of how many days close to month end.

In terms of retainers most full / part livery yards charge full price or close to full price to retain the stable whilst you are replacing the horse as most of their staff and maintenance costs and rates etc are fixed each month. Some give a little off for hay / feed / bedding. Many dont.

DIY are more likely to offer a retainer IME.

I would ask politely if there was any way the yard owner could refund the cost of feed and bedding or alternatively give it to you as you have paid for it. I wouldn't expect a refund on the wages as these are fixed and there is no saving to the yard owner with the stable empty. Nor would I expect a refund on the cost of the stable as presumably it might take 3 weeks before another horse moves in. However I would expect any stable I had paid for to be left empty for the period I had paid. To be honest as a yard owner I would like to think I would refund the 3 weeks as a kind gesture after you lost your horse but the horse world is full of less than reasonable people.

That last sentence is a bit unfair. I’m aware of many yards struggling to even break even profit margins are often lacking. If they can afford to it’s a nice gesture but it’s not expected if they can’t.
