i received a parcel from a small but well known equestrian company, one that is run by the owner. Inside was a fairly expensive item of clothing, that i hadn’t ordered! There was no paperwork with it, no packing note, nothing. Just the company name on the packaging. Thoroughly confused, I phoned them up but couldn’t get through. After a few attempts I left a voicemail, explaining and asking them to call me. No one did! I eventually called again and got through and when I explained the mystery I wasn’t even met with a simple ’sorry’ or ’thanks' ! Just oh the wrong address label must have been stuck on (Im a previous customer) so if you could send it back to me I’ll refund your postage. They didn’t even ask for my address or contact details. I don’t live anywhere near a post office , I will of course return it but I cant help feeling a bit put out that they didn’t even seem bothered!

that would annoy me. we live in a rural area that has very limited post office facilites about half hour drive away, and its only open during limited hours. So for me to post an object back i've to take time off work and waste diesel. The cost of postage back would be the least of the hassle! I never would in reality, but i'd be tempted to include an invoice for diesel costs and loss of earnings!

That sounds really unprofessional. It's their mistake, so you definitely shouldn't have to be inconvenienced to have to send it back.

If they were any good they would have said "Oh we're really sorry about that - there must have been a mix up. As a gesture of goodwill, please keep the parcel".

I wouldn't be going out my way to send it back if that's the way they had spoken to me. If you do ask for postage costs upfront.

Not a great attitude from the business! Quite thoughtless as it can be a real bother to send things. They could have posted you a return label to save you having to wait for a refund, and a money off voucher for your honesty/time/fuel/parking costs/general hassle of it all. Ironic that if a dishonest person had received it, they wouldn't have the bother of doing the right thing and would have a free item!

If they don't want to arrange for a courier to come to you and collect it don't bother sending it back. I have in the past received items by mistake, no one has ever wanted them back!

I remember being told that if you are sent an item, unsolicitated, which you haven't ordered / requested or even paid for you are under no obligation to return it. Don't know how true this is. I would be inclined to tell the company concerned that it's not convenient for you to post item to them & you will hold pending them collecting it within 7 days. After this time you will dispose of it.

I wouldn't be returning it and I wouldn't have gone to that much trouble to contact them in the first place. I'd have phoned and left voicemail or emailed, then put the package to one side for 6mth. If it hadn't been collected in that time, I'd be considering it as mine and doing whatever I wished with it.

In your shoes I'd be sending them another message saying its inconvenient for you to return it and asking them to contact you regarding collecting it.

Similarly in February I ordered some clothes from a popular outlet online and received an email saying they had been delivered to my porch. I don't have a porch!
I tracked the parcel down as its a tiny village with a history of courier difficulties! The lady who's porch it was in had returned it via the po as return to sender.
Took me until this week to get a refund.
Incredibly unprofessional of companies and tbh I can't really see how it happened?
I could maybe understand if op had placed an order which was packed at the same time but...

Am I obligated to return or pay for merchandise I never ordered?

A. No. If you receive merchandise that you didn’t order, you have a legal right to keep it as a gift.

i feel better in as much as im not just a miserable cow then! Im certainly not going to go out of my way, i might pop them an email to say it needs to be collected. Honestly I wondered initially if Id been online shopping in my sleep or after a gin too many :p !

You have a legal obligation to inform the sender and must keep it pending them collecting.

They cannot insist you pay to send it back. Usually a prepaid postal sack with a gift or coupon and please drop this in a post office when you get chance is the solution. Mistakes do happen and how a company deals with them speaks volumes.

Some villages have one postcode for the whole village if they're small, satnav probably takes everyone to that ladies house. They should have given you a refund as soon as you/they realised it had been delivered to the wrong address. That's really bad they made you wait.

I do not know if this is still the law, but 30 years ago it was:

You have no obligation to return the item. If you do not inform the sender, it becomes yours if it is not collected in six months. If you do inform the sender it becomes yours after 30 days.

OP I certainly would not pay to send it back. I would inform them that they must send you a reply paid label.

The shop wasn't a female name, was it? If so, they did it to me a couple of years back!

The postcode isn't the entire of anyone's delivery address though? Otherwise all my items would end up further up the hill :p

I received, well it was thrown over my side gate, a parcel from Asda, George clothing last Xmas... my address but a different name, but I don't deal with Asda direct , I phoned them twice befor I got any reply, and they said they will send courier for it I waited.....twice...no collection, phoned again, not much response, no courier, so I put parcel in shed, where it still is!!! I will open it one day see what's inside it...!!

Personally I'd tell them that no, its up to them to arrange collection by Fedex etc. and that you'll leave it out for them (or else you'll have to hang around waiting for the couriers!) otherwise you'll just keep the item. I wouldn't go out of my way to return an item you didnt order and be out of pocket in fuel getting to the post office (mine is a 10 min drive away). I had an item rock up at my door that I hadn't ordered and they'd asked me to do the same thing except drop it off at one of those drop points, the nearest drop point to me was a 25 minute drive each way! - I told them my fee would be £150 which is my business fee per hour ;) They arranged a different courier to collect from my door...
