Would you be annoyed in this case?

I get my mare shod every 4-5 weeks as i like to keep her feet in tip top condition and to avoid any foot related conditions. Farrier usually puts a new set on (only shod in front) then the next time uses the same shoes so in total this one pair of shoes are on for 9-10weeks. But when she was shod on tues he put the same shoes on for the 3rd time which means they will be on her for 14-15weeks (already done 10 weeks atm) but surely that would cause uneven wear?!! Shes hacked for an hr a week sometimes twice a week (rest in arena) and the front of them are worn into like a slope were the toe is, not flat like a new shoe. Her feet are in great condition, very hardy imo but she is very slightly toed out still, she was more toed out when we got her in Jan but with the amount of filling shes done shes become straighter so its not very noticable unless you know its there. If this was your horse would you be worried/royaly narked off? As i was extremely cross on tues!!

Yes i have to hold her cause shes a bit of a madam sometimes  I was talking to someone at the time and didnt realise the same shoe was on until after num 1 was done!! Didnt bother asking tbh as i was just thinking "Il get someone else next time!!" thats how peeved off i was when i realised and i didnt want to say anything as it would probably sound rude :(

I cannt speak for your horse's feet in particular but my farrier has used the same shoes on my horse for up to 3 times, not because i am tight but because she was not ridden on roads and the shoes had no wear whatsoever.

So if you shoe every 4 weeks, re-fit once & then a new set the next time, a set lasts you 8-10 weeks? I have mine done every 8weeks & sometimes mine are re-fits. Think your worrying to much, but then again i dont know how much work you do/dont do as to how much you wear your shoes.
Editted to say i missed the bit about how much work you do, to be honest thats not really very much, the arena shouldnt wear your shoes overly & a couple of hours of hacking a week isnt much.

I should think they were put on as there was no issue for them to be re used. Your farrier is not likely to reduce his wage unless they were fine to be reused. I would be grateful if mine saved me money.
For piece of mind ring him saying you are intrigued as to why he used them again not new. My old boy used to have full set on for 8weeks then swapped to opposite side for another 8weeks being hacked 3-4times a week and schooled twice.

How much did he charge?

PS. I was at the meadows today on the billy-o-sauros jumping in the schools thingy :p He was ridden by one of the smaller novice riders - B looked HUGE

If you hack for one hour once or twice a week, it's highly likely that the shoes weren't worn enough to justify replacing. Rather than be angry, I think you should be grateful that rather than replace them 'as usual' thereby charging you the usual replacement fee, he has chosen to re-use them thereby saving you some money.

So, definitely don't be annoyed - just call him up and ask. And if he confirms it was as above, then thank him!

Hmmm maybe i have over reacted!! My previous horse had a chipped nav so i suppose i tend to be a bit more "Oh cripes what if it happens again!!" kinda thinking!! Tbh i feel the same when they go on for the second time as the nails dont go completely into the shoe so the foot kind of rocks back and forth on the concrete for a day untill they wear down!!

ON really, you should of came and said hello :p I was going to go watch for a while but decided i couldnt be bothered as i was being lazy and lunged today :o What time were you there at, as i do recall seeing a large coloured in the distance ;) Oh he charged £30 as it was further for him to travel when its usually 22!!

I get charged £50 per set for my cob and sometimes in the past the shoes were not woren at all. But I still got a new set. It depended how much road work we had done. I think he sounds like he is doing you a favour!

hun do you trust your farrier ? i trust mine as he is brilliant and also not out to fleece me = talk to him say youre concerns and TALK - my big lad sometimes has re fits 3 times as not on roads much esp in winter when ground soft but Mark as done wonders with his feet and his idea of bars as just been briil - no abcesses for 2 years - please please talk to your farrier and dont dwell on something that wont cause harm short term - i would never want to lose my farrier :) xxx

nicoles you havent over reacted - you were worried and we all do about our babies - and you came on here listened and well sometimes we need this forum to make us think - big hug and hey you care for youre baby is that a bad thing ? lol :)

A simple rule - never be silently annoyed - air it!

Number one - in this instance - you are the customer - what did you ask for? If it has been customary for you to leave matters up to the farriers judgement - then you have nothing to be annoyed about.

For the future resolve to ask for refits or new - be specific.

I would think your pony's well being will be unaffected with either decision by the amount of work you're doing - how the shoe is fitted is far more important.

And if you have a farrier who is doing a tradesmanlike job, turns up on time when he says and charges £22 for half refits - don't upset him!

Nope - it is far far better for your horse's legs/joints to be allowed to move naturally - my farrier 'pre- wears' my horses shoes prior to fitting new sets so as not to strain joints by artificially altering his movement. Be really careful about altering things like toe-out too, if you leave well alone you shouldn't have any issues, if you try and force an adult horse into a stance its conformation wouldn't allow without shoes/ trimming, again you'll increase stress on the joints/structures in the leg. One of my horses is slightly toe-out and I would fire any farrier who tried to 'correct' it - fast way to a lame horse IMO.

Old farrier used to refit shoes several times if he could.

New farrier won't do refits at all, due to wear on the inside surface of the shoe. The horses hoof wears a slight groove in the inside surface where it touches - the farrier got us to close our eyes and feel the inside of the shoe, and then we felt the groove there. He says this is bad for the horse. I'm quite happy as I like my horse having shiny new shoes :)

Honestly i was unaware you could alter toeing out lol Shes only 4 atm and when we got her vetted to buy at the start of Jan vet said it doesnt and shouldnt cause her any problems (passed 5 stage vetting). Then we were told that when she filled out in the chest her legs would straighten up, i thought it was a pile of garbage when i heard that :p but she has actually straightened up in the past few months as well as filling out!! Still there but people only notice if i tell them ;)

We pay £75 a set, for new shoes! I was £75 for front heart bars only. Your farrier seems really cheap! :)

No, I wouldn't be annoyed. I would trust my farrier to make an educated judgement on whether the shoes can go back on or not. After all, he's the professional.

I hack for 4-5 hours a week and get mine shod every 6 weeks, mine get refits sometimes and I am happy that my farrier knows best and happy he has saved me money :)

Ditto, I trust my farrier too! After all he is the one who did 4 years training, not me.

I am very interested in foot balance, shoes etc and always ask 'why'.
