Ben got a bit of rug rub this year on his mane...

Now it wasn't ott, I was lucky in that the lower part of his mane was just *thinned* however, obviously the upper part (which is normally thicker anyway) was significantly thicker. So I decided, bearing in mind I'm going to a county show... To trim the thinner section with scissors, so's not to pull any additional thickness out of it, and pull and thin the upper mane.

Now I mentioned this to yo, and she screamed sacrilege!:eek: to chopping a mane for any reason with scissors:eek::eek:, the next day when I'd turned up... She'd pulled his mane for me:o. And it's wispy and ragged and pretty piss poor where its been rubbed.

Now ordinarily I'd be ticked off, others have said they would be mad, and I'm ultimately going to have to pay out on something ludicrous like horse hair extensions:eek: but I just don't know, it feels like its been done now and can't be changed... I have to just deal with what I've got...

Would you be mad?

I would go mental.

I've done what you describe for years to even out manes, either with scissors or a solo comb and it looks loads better than pulling it all if the thickness varies much.

I'd be absolutely furious! You're right in that it's done now and there's nothing you can do to change that, but YO had no right to do it without your permission. I would tell her firmly but calmly that she must not EVER do anything like that again to your horse. If she thinks you're fine with her doing it, who knows what else she may decide to do.

Yes. You coud have pulled the rest and trimmed the thin bit once the rest was pulled

Also what you could have done was save the pullings, Plait them, leather them in hairspray and rolled and sewn them into plaits of various sizes, therefore giving yourself something to thicken up the wispy base plaits with as you plait the wispy bit, roll it around the fake plait ball then sew into place and presto instant normal plait.

So in my eyes she's screwed you twice!!

I just don't get this 'scissors on manes' is sacrilege thing.:( Who cares? It's hardly abuse,is it?!?

Who'd want their hair pulling out anyway?! Can't say as you can blame them if they don't love it:D Seems a bit old fashioned,as plenty of people can achieve an excellent result using other methods, without 'pulling'.
I just think, each to their own and anyway, what the hell,it grows back...;)

Sorry,I didn't answer question-yes,I'd be more than 'ticked off' as she did it purposefully, knowing you were going to do it your way(which she didn't approve of) :(

It was without my permission, although there was a 'joke' a week before about getting her to pull his mane because of his foot stomping strops, but I had tasked her with pulling tail, clipping legs and trimming face when she got back from badminton... I'd made it clear that I was going to work on mane myself, thinning out the thickness a bit each day after working him and then evening everything up... When she said cutting it would look odd, I'd said it didn't matter to me because it wouldn't make a damn bit of difference to how it looked plaited and my only concern was getting the plaits to look as uniform a shape as possible... I didn't want some weedy ones at the bottom of his neck and some big ones higher up... :(

But contrary to how I would normally behave I can't help just think 'deal with what is and don't dwell on the past'

Normally I'd be pissed

Ah thats slightly different then, if you'd asked her to pull his tail and trim the rest of him, and joked about the mane - perhaps she thought you'd meant it?

Is there another horse with a similar coloured mane that could be thinned to lend you some hair for fake plaits?

ps. Not saying I don't sympathise!

I am *kind of* lucky in that his tail needs sorting so when that is done I do have the option of making false plaits from that and fixing them on, although I can't get the perfect *shape-* to the base of the plait that way, which is why I'm considering extensions... Ho hum... Lesson learnt, never tell yo your cutting your horses mane:rolleyes:

No honey... I was very clear about what I wanted done and what I didn't... It was clearly a joke. Although my dad did say... Well you know what to say if you ever want your horses mane pulled... Just tell her your going to cut it with scissors! But no, we were clearly joking... I even actually commented to my mum that night that I would have to crack on with pulling bens mane because yo was so against me cutting it that if I didn't get In there she would probably do it herself, when I got up there the next day... It was done:(

I simply can't change things now but it's costing me a lot in planning how I can get him perfect for the county show, let alone next weeks local.

On the subject of the colours... It's black and white... His tail is white and is being pulled when he is sedated. I have black tail and mane but don't really want to use it... It's ebony's... So I'm going to buy some extensions.

Why are people obsessed by pulling? I have the scissored look manes or tails but there are so many good rakes now that give you a natural look that enable you to just shorten or thin out a mane painlessly.
I would be p**** but I wouldn't fall out over it, just tell her you prefered it how it was and you rather do it your way.

I'd be a bit annoyed, but sure she was only trying to help.

I would try and politely say that you'd rather just get on with your own thing, and need no help. Thanks but no thanks!

When do you need it for, and how much? I need to pull/thin my mare's mane, and that is black... I could post you it!

I'm probably missing about four inches width at about four inches length to be able to make false plaits... :( however, I think the only way I'm going to get a good look for the base of the plaits is to use extensions! So going to have to treat Ben like he is an a list celeb:eek: but than you xx

I would much rather pull. I don't think any of the rakes give a proper natural look tbh. I also hate the scissored looks. I'm perhaps a bit old fashioned though!:o

This thread makes me realise how lucky I am to be on a tiny yard with a non-horsey YO who wouldn't have the foggiest what I meant if I said I was going to 'pull' or 'scissor' my horse's mane!

However, a small silver lining to this week... I went to a friends house tonight and she has a beagler in navy, navy cords, a hunter bridle with a 1.5 inch noseband, and a sabre show saddle I can borrow this season... Result...

Now if I can only sort the sodding mane out lol!

Can you post a pic QB of his mane?

I don't generally disagree, but the only bit to *pull* on bens lower mane, meant that he had no mane when this was pulled, meaning his mane now goes form an inch short to four inches long, if I had been allowed to do it my way, I'd just have cut the thinned bit to about three inches and thinned and pulled the thicker bit to match... Pulling the already thinned bit, pulled out the only existing length.:(

I would go mental I dont have many foibles but my horses manes tails and whiskers is one.
The only time I have ever been close to losing my temper with a groom when I came onto the yard to find she had decided to cut the tail of my Amercian sadldle bred you know they have very very long tails you would have thought She might have thought there was a reason for it trailing on the ground.

Sorry QB - I should have pointed out that I meant in general. I do think in your situ that it was a good idea to do what you did.

Any chance of a piccie to give more of an idea of his mane now?

My girl has slight sweet itch, and all summer I managed to maintain her mane nicely, ready for the one (yes, ONE) show of the entire year. Two weeks (!!) before the show, she rubbed a patch out of her mane and completely messed it up plait wise for me! Grr! Managed to wing it by almost halving the amount of plaits I was meant to do originally - but it was a pain in the ****!:o:rolleyes:

Badger has a really thick mane at the top and almost non existent at the bottom.. his plaits don't look too bad?

:eek::eek::mad: bit ch!!! I would have been livid... Not certain why I'm not now, I suppose its because I adore my yo in every other way and she's been such a brick and an inspiration, and I've been able to trust my boy in her care more than any other person with my horses... So I suppose she get this one glitch

I will take some pics tomorrow and post them, I was considering megatek... We have until the sixth of June, we do have a show on the 12th of this month but my main priority is looking good for royal cornwall show. That is the only one I care about.

He looks fab, his mane looks great, my worry is Ben isn't naturally dispositioned to lots of little plaits, his neck suits less and larger if you get my drift... He ain't dainty... Lol x

That may well work in your favour.

How far down near his withers is his mane that short? Could you take some of that off as a saddle path?

I'm not really a showing girl, but I'm sure if he looks and acts the part the judge shouldn't be worring what his plaits look like.

I'd just get on with it and enjoy your horse. At least you can secretly blame YO now if he doesn't win! ;)

I can and the bit down there was actually largely untouched by the rug, about 1/3 to 1/2 of his mane has realistically been compromised, although without the 'pulling' incident more would have been salvageable... Without the pulling,I'd probably have been looking at one false plait... Now, probably three or four! Probably about three white, one black. As I said though, my main issue is getting a nice shape to the base of the plait. I reckon if I'm lucky I will have a couple of inches maybe a bit more to play with... I promise I will post a picture tomorrow... I'd really appreciate the input on this!
