i ahve a 16 year old througabred who is prone to tying up and reaccurent colic was very nearly pts last time due to severity, no ulcers underlying and has episode of tying up also, on mash and alfa a oil not allowed any mixes or nuts under vets isntructions, he lost a lot of weight a few weeks ago blodos revealed all ok apart from muscle enzymes rasied ++ , he has put on weight but not a lot has a belly but can still see ribs ++ advice needed thanks
 
I would contact a nutritionist for advice on his diet as you may need some extra in it for him.NAF Pink Powder is a good way of getting more benefit from what he is eating.Could you also add some oil to his feed.
I assume he is on ad lib hay/grass and that he is warm enough at night.
 
hi yes he is on ad lib haylage and careful with re to turnout 4/5 hours a day as gets stressed otherwise which could trigger colic, he is rugged alwways day and night, which oil is best to use do you think?? is corn oil ok? many thanks
 
i would talk to your vet, review his diet (talk to all available help lines), review his living arrangements(he really should be able to go out for longer with a special friend and be relaxed in his home environment), is the haylage rich? whats his workload? normally tying up and recurrant colic is a management issue. rugging .. is he too hot? most can manage with naked in day light rug at night. also if bloods are showing raised muscle enzymes then he shouldnt really be doing anything other than relaxed turnout til bloods come back normal. do you spend 15 mins working in in walk and stretching, and a further 10 to 15 mins walking him off and stretching to reduce any lactic acid build up in the muscles? also look at worming and teeth ... time to worm for taspe worm which dont show on blood counts, remenber to do for encysted redworms in dec. so many factors to take into consideration ..... and i have only mentioned the main ones..............
