Would you bother with a vetting for a veteran?

Hope so

Normally I would say no. Not worth it for a horse of 18 yrs.
BUT, when I wanted to insure my oldie with a different insurer they wanted a two stage vetting done....

Most insurers wouldn't want a vetting done unless you wanted to insure a horse for over a certain value or you'd owned it for a long time without insurance so to be honest I wouldn't think twice about the insurance issue. At that age and value it's not an issue.

My mare was 16 when I bought her and to be honest the vetting would of cost more than I paid for her. I did however take an experienced horse person with me, she as been the best horse I have ever owned and never had a sick note in over 5 years.

I bought an 18 year old warmblood (stressage horse) for my daughter last year. I didn't have him vetted and he was significantly more money!!) At 18 I would expect wear + tear etc. I did contact the owners insurance company to see if I could keep him on full cover (the answer was yes-although I had already bought him

!!) as he had never had anything wrong in the 3 years they had insured him.

My physio checked him over (after purchase) and reckoned he was about 12/13!! I have had him 8 months now and he is fab.

**prepares to be shot down in flames**
I confess I have never had a horse vetted, from a brood mare to a £12k show jumping pony.... I take a very experienced friend to a 2nd viewing and also rely on gut instinct with owners........ Thinking I actually bought the 18 year old on a single viewing, told them within an hour of leaving that we wanted him and had him on my yard by tea time next day

Sashpip - you sound like me.... the last vetran i brought was decided upon whilst i was riding round the school with a grin so big that you could not see anything else off me (I blame OH !) - we did not even leave the yard (and that was after a lecutre on the way down saying "we dont decide anything today, we think it over and make a decision tomorrow morning"
- The best decision i have ever made !
