Her symptoms are well under control with Pergolide. One of the vets at the practice says it is absolutely fine to do so and one says no way! Any experiences?

Thanks

Personally absolutely no way. She has enough problems of her own without adding to them, and pregnancy would alter all her hormone balances and her blood sugar .. aaaargh I can't even contemplate it!!

Personally, under no circumstances. IMO, it would not help the mare at all and the hormone imbalances could exacerbate her problems. Enjoy what time you have left with her and I hope the Pergolide continues to keep her condition under control. Having owned two horses with Cushings, I would not go there.

Absolutely not and I cannot believe anyone would even consider it due to welfare issues for the mare and possible genetic issues for the foal.

Why would anyone consider breeding more horses in the current financial climate especially from a far from perfect broodmare!

Echo this

Looking at the title of this post, I expected to be horrified by a few people saying yes- I'm pleasantly surprised that this isn't the case. :-D

Pregnacy throws a mares hormones all over the place in normal circumstances, never mind a poor girl with cushings!!!

If anybody did knowing she had it I'm afraid that's just darn irresponsible.

Enjoy your girl, let her chill. If she's doing well there's no reason to take her 100steps backwards by breeding from her.

I've got a cushings gelding, under control wit pergolide, but the smallest change can disrupt him, his eating & alsorts. If he was a mare i'd never consider breeding from him.

Echo NO!

My gelding is under control with his cushings but just even environmental changes effect him!

Would not like to see a poor mare go through all of that

No way but what's more worrying is a vet said yes????
Agree with above just enjoy your girl, all the unwanted horses we have anyway in this world is untrue so maybe give one off them a home???

Absolutely, definately, totally not!!! And change your vet!!!! Oh, and you might want to advise the vet registration board that one of its members see's no problem with breeding from a cushings mare!!!!! Horrified!!

I think that answers my question! The vet is the top man in the practice and has a lot of dealings with the ILPH horses so I considered him to know what he was talking about. He was adamant that it would be ok (I didn't even ask - he told me without prompting) but yes, if I have my doubts I already know the answer don't I?

Thanks

I have to say, there are already FAR too many horse, unwanted, in the UK. C'mon, don't be silly, and do NOT breed from this mare. Have some sense!

Personally? No.

HOWEVER, I do know of a breeder of spanish horses who had a 6yo mare diagnosed with cushings, it is unusual but not unheard of for them to develop it at a young age. On the advice of his vet, they did put the mare in foal, apparently the hormones produced during pregnancy do help alleviate some of the problems. While the mare was pregnant the laminitis was kept at bay, BUT once she had given birth it came back with a vengeance and the mare did have to be pts leaving an orphan foal.
