I think I know the answer based on the other thread I was looking at but I’ve been blessed with a lifetime of clean limbed horses (event he navicular one!). Would you buy a younster with a splint? Smart well bred 2yo colt, will be gelded and used as a companion/for general riding - I don’t show. Splint is settled approx 1.5in below the knee, caused by youngster hijinks about on hard ground, pony is sound. Pony is a reasonable price even for a field ornament to be honest BUT he’s a smart enough sort/decent size that I’d like to back him and maybe find a small-ish person to share him too or poss sell on in the future.

Anyway I digress - the vibe I get from most threads is that people don’t mind a young pony throwing a splint … but would you buy one like that?

Sure, if it's not in a place liable to cause problems later (rare). Splints tend to remodel and reduce over time too.

Even really big splints reduce over time - wouldn't bother me but may be a negotiating tool

Yes. Mine got a couple from going too fast on hard ground. One is now nearly gone and the other has reduced a lot - neither bothered him in the slightest at any stage.

Yes, my son's pony had one when we had her as a 5yo. Over the 5yrs we had her it reduced in size. I wouldn't if showing but as long as it is far enough away from the knee and not affecting a ligament go for it.

No worries about that unless you were dead set on showing. And at two, every chance they’ll reduce in size as well.

Yes, my horse threw a couple of splints as a 2 yo never caused a problem & disappeared over time x

There's a load of horses with splints. Doesn't really matter unless you're showing. Doesn't really affect the value of a horse either. Definitely go for it.

Quite a few of the youngsters in last years Billy auction had splints, it didn't seem to put the buyers off...Splints are " one of those things" , I carefully looked after one horse's legs for 12 years, then a splint appeared when turned away for a break.

Price agreed, transport arranged and yellow pony was sold from under my nose to someone else … back to the drawing board!! thanks for all your input everyone
