Would you buy a Grey Horse??????

I said categorically no to a grey and still got one - this is my third. She does look beautiful when she's clean tho, and stands out in the show ring.

I do worry about melanomas, but no more than anything else :)

However, we're going to breed from her next year, and if she throws a grey, that's good, because it'll be a lot easier for me to let the foal go!

My Fleabitten Grey is 18, no melanomas but always suffers from mud fever. He loves the mud but looks stunning at shows when he's clean and gleaming white (never lasts long).

Should probably look for a lower maintenance coloured horse next time but if I found another good one I don't think I could resist! :)

No I'll never buy another grey.

I lost my horse of a lifetime last summer to melanomas at 17. He 1st showed signs of a few small ones at 10, they hardly did anything until he was 16 when they started multplying. They are agressive and unpredictable.

Once bitten, twice shy.

Yes have had 2 (see sig). Neither have had/do have any visible melanoma problems.

Last time i said i did not want a 4 year old, a mare or another grey, so that was exactly what i ended up with. Next time i will try again & we will see :D

we do have a grey, but he is iron/roan/dappley.

its not the melanomas that worry me but the cost of the shampoo.....OCD+poo stained grey=nervous breakdown!

when i went horse shopping for star i only had 2 *no's*...greys and mares.

Yes, of course if it was sound, healthy and wanted to do the job. A lot more things can go wrong with horses than melanomas, why pick that thing to get a bee in your bonnet about and rule out loads of potentially good horses?

/\ /\ /\ This! :)

My grey was a write off at aged 8. :( But prior to that, she was the best horse I've ever sat on :)

Personally, I'm a sucker for a nice grey :D

When we had to retire our bay TB ex-racer gelding, we did not want a huge horse, or a mare or a grey - so what did we fall in love with? Yup, a huge grey mare. If it's meant to be, it's meant to be lol!
By the way, Rach, your grey is gorgeous!!!!!

yes colour wouldnt put me off ours is dapple grey stroppy mare and has melanomas on tail .passed 5 stage vetting despite this...there is no such thing as a perfect horse in my opinion,

Greys are more prone to melanomas.

Sort of wish I'd bought a dark bay rather than a coloured.

I bought a dapple grey and a steel grey. The dapple grey develpped melanomas, but it would not put me off buying another grey.

a good horse is never a bad colour... Sunblock is my biggest problem with a grey, plus melanoma risk. Oh and the getting them to look grey! But My most wonderful ISH mare is dapple grey with appaloosa spots (weird huh!) and I wouldn't change her for the world.

Oh- i see you are in Kent- i have an ISH dapple grey with black spots too? He was from the Denstead Stud in Kent!

When I started to look again at horses, I wanted dark bay (again), so ended looking at 2 bays, 2 greys, 2 chestnut, 1 piebald, 1 skewbald and 1 cremello  - have now ended up with a dark bay after all, but when looking I soon realised the colour does not matter at all and it was the horse and his personality that mattered most. I just happened to have ended up with a dark bay, but if he had been grey, or in fact any colour it would not have mattered, as he is just great - so far!! :D

If the horse was perfect for me then I may consider it. Melanomas are always going to be a high risk with grays and it depends on where they get them. A pony I used to ride at a riding school was recently put down after many problems and a post mortem revealed his intestine was riddled with large melanomas. I know a few that have problems with being ridden or even eating, as the mouth and lips are quite common areas for melanomas.

HOWEVER....I hate how I notice the hairs more when they moult :)
Yesterday I bathed 2 grey horses at work, turned them out and they rolled and are now dirty again grrr.

I have always loved darker coloured horses as it's easier to keep then clean and get a better shine off them :)
