going to look at a schoolmistress for my daughter tomorrow which sounds ideal apart from the fact she was seen to weave on a busy yard with lots of coming and going.her owners say this is only occasional and if routine changed dramatically.i know theres no such thing as a perfect horse would you tolerate this if everything else was good

Definatly!
It may be her current surrounding that are causing her to weave. I am unsure what sort of yard she will be kept on if you buy her but if it is on a smaller/quieter yard she may prefer it and stop doing it.

I would go take a look. I think it depends on what your daughter would like to do with th horse. Obviously, show jumping and cross country might not be do-able is she weaves alot.

Why not? My old loan horse would've won an olympic gold in weaving and she was a cracking show jumper. The only reason she didn't do xc was she hated brush and ditches.

i own one. didn't put me off. he's perfect in every other way. he weaves like a crazy beast if others are getting fed/turned out before him. i keep him out as much as possible and just make sure hes done first on the yard. it hasn't affected him and i dont see why it would. he's done Medium dressage, showing, 3ft Sjing and XC no worries.

My horse in an ex-racehorse and she used to weave all the time. We put up weave bars and voila, no more weaving Hurrah!! Even when she did it it didnt seem to affect her. Someone did tell me to put rubber matting down where she stood when she used to weave to lessen presure on joints (which she actually has anyway) but I dont know if this would help or not!

My daughters pony weaves at feedtime and in the morning before he goes out, it can be quite dramatic, he is however the most laid back pony in every other way, a complete schoolmaster! Two weeks ago my mum bought him a webbing type mesh to attach to the stable door instead of the normal stable door. Miraculously he hasn,t weaved since, NOT ONCE. Remarkable!!! I definatley would not rule out a horse because it weaves as there are so many ways to help combat it. NB The webbing attachment is available through Robinsons it was under £30 Hope this helps

Yes, mine does and it doesn't affect him as far as I'm aware.
The only thing that would cure mine is 24/7 turnout but unfortunately a lot of us can't do this.

My way of thinking is they can do what they like in their spare time as long as they are safe and behave when you ride them.
When my mare came she weaved badly in the stable but now with a good routine and she has settled well she doesnt do it while stabled now.
The one thing I would say is it does put some people off if they say weaving on an advert but if this is reflected in the price you are paying then it wouldnt matter.
If it bothers you put a grill up on the door.

It wouldn't put me off buying a horse I really liked, the only thing is be wary of what the seller describes as occasional?! Unfortunately in a yard I used to be in which sold quite a few horses (about 4 or 5 of which weaved) they always gave them hay before anyone came to see them so as there was no weaving and a few which were described as "been seen to weave" never stopped!
I'm not saying this is widespread or that in different surroundings it will not be better but just make sure you know the extent!

I wouldnt but then its a personal thing..... I does my head in to see a horse look so unhappy

Same with crib biters/wind suckers..... same with feeling sorry for them, plus the damage they do

Also some yards are a bit biased towards no vices.... wouldnt affect me at my yard, but might if I wanted to move yards.

Sorry... i seem to be in the minority here

i bought my mare 15 months ago and unknown to me she weaved!! was not informed of this, but arrived weaving in horsebox!!......but now just a little at feed time and the rest of the time she is very happy in her stable. she is good in all other aspects and it doesn't affect her at all. I would buy her again., and it wouldn't put me off a slight weaver in the future. just go and see...gut instict.

I didnt know one of mine did till he got here, he does it when stabled until he can see another horse, and feed time plus when pony is taken out, doesnt really affect him any other way although I agree its upsetting to see him do it.

My pc eventer weaves and nothing stops him when he wants to. Now we are both in our 30's and have had over 20 years together he still weaves and I still love him! I wouldn't let it put you off, though it should be reflected in the price.

niagaraduval why would weaving affect whether it could SJ or XC?

[/ QUOTE ]

Some really bad weavers actually hop from side to side (I've seen a pony do this) they can damage their joints over time ...
