would you buy a horse with a substantial scar??

I would (and have!) bought a scarred horse. If it suits you in every other way, and you don't want to do serious showing - then go for it ;)

Little horse has a scar across his chest

which started off as this!

it was a clean puncture across his chest and there was nothing in the field that he could of caused it and due to the public right of way through the field and the way he was acting around other people in the field we can only assume somebody did it to him :(

he placed 2nd in a largish local show and when she asked about the scar I just said it was a field accident when he was a yearling and she didn't mark me down :)

I'm going to go against the grain here, personally I wouldn't buy a horse who had scarring.

My second horse had scarring, and I though: not into showing, doesn't affect his ability (had been winning over 1.20 tracks & jumping 1.40 at home). What I didn't take into account was the reason for all the scarring - he was accident prone

Long & sad story but after I'd had him a year he slipped over in the school, damaged his meniscal ligament & after another 10 months had to be PTS :(

He also had had various injuries during the first year I had him.

wouldn't bother me at all, as long as the history added up, and the vetting vet was happy - there can be firbrous tissue under nasty scars. I have a nasty scar from a back op, but hubs says it doesn't bother him, lol ;)
