I have been offered a nice sounding WB mare cheaply but from a reputable place.The problem is she doesn't have a passport.Where do I stand regarding this? I thought all horses were supposed to have them by now although I do understand that some people don't bother with them.Question is would you take a chance on an unpapered unpassported horse?
 
You cannot sell a horse without a passport.

You can buy one.....good law isnt it!!

Id ask myself WHY this horse is cheap and why it hasnt got a passport.
 
that is exactly what I am asking myself.I am naturally suspicious but I am going to go and have a look and take my very experienced YO with me and needless to say I shall expect to see it doing all the things that I expect of it.
Question is ..if this horse is actually any good and I do buy am I likely to have any problem getting a passport for it?
 
Agree with Spaniel - think I would seriously question why its cheap and why it doesnt have a passport.

Also can the sellers PROVE the mare belongs to them (im not a very trusting sort of person when it comes to this sort of thing). I would hate to see someone get 'scammed'.
 
It is a big equestrian centre that are selling it so I'm sure its not stolen,just green and needs some schooling.It supposedly has a nice temperament and hacks out nicely and can pop a decent jump.9yrs old and £1600 so not dirt cheap but still cheap for what it is.
 
i think my first question would be how long have they had the horse. If its genuinely been there for years then fair enough but if its arrived within the past 2 years they should have bought it with a passport.

If they say its come from the sales then it will have had to have apassport to go through the ring.

Ask around (not the sellers) and be a bit nosey, see if you can get background on it from a neutral party.

IF you go ahead with the purchase I would request the vendor gets and shows you a passport BEFORE you start paying out to have her vetted etc.

Passports are still being issued, if you are happy the horse is legit, the papers will not be a problem
 
Well, as a warning, someone I know bought a horse from a "reputable equine centre" They could not find the passport! This person paid for a five star vetting, which the horse passed. A few weeks later, another vet was called out to the horse's new home, and guess what? It was blind in one eye! Something which we can assume would have been on the passport if the "reputable" sellers had not "lost" it! So. go and have a look, get a vet not associated with the centre to vet it and buy it if you want to. Just make sure you are covered! Good luck.

Yes, never buy a horse without a passport - there's usually a reason why it's gone missing!
