Why stop at one?! I said I would never buy my child a pony until she was old enough to look after it, she got to 4 and I went to see an old pony that was for sale, and they gave me the pony's best friend - a real bogof deal.
It worked out brilliantly, as we always had a friend round to ride so she never got bored on her own, it stopped me getting too intense, and having a friend to ride with kept her keen and competitive - if the friend tried to canter, she wanted to canter.
I would highly recommend two in fact!
