would you buy an older horse?

i'd buy one, i currently have 4 veterans and it is my youngster (9 years old so not that young) who has cost me the most in terms of vets fees.

Infact touch wood so far the only times my oldies have had to see the vet was for vaccines and sedateing to get thier teeth done. One of my 25 yearolds is still looking like he is in his early teens, still winning at county shows, out gallops the 16hh 9 yearold (pony in question is 14hh) and generaly thinks he is 3 years old (the last hack we took him on instead of walk calmly down a bank he launched himself off the top and buggered off at a canter with his novice rider hanging on for dear life).

I bought Chex when he was 16. I almost backed out, but decided that his age didn't matter. It was the best choice I've ever made! Almost 10 years later and he's still going strong!

I used to be very age biased and even sold a horse when it reached 12 as I thought it was too old!! However We bought Odie last year at the grand old age of 12 and also this year bought my OH a 19 yr old Advanced dressage schoolmaster.... So I think the bias has gone now!

I bought an advanced event horse as a schoolmaster. He was 14. He was the best thing I have ever bought! Worth his weight in gold and still acts like a looney even though he is now 17. At the level I do (OPN and hoping to do ON) he finds it all very easy. When he starts not enjoying then I will retire him, but for now it seems a long way off.
