Would you buy a pony like this?

11 year old Shetland, fantastic temperament, genuinely likes small children. Good on or off leadreain, will do ride and lead (either way), safe in traffic, good to box/shoe/vet etc. Even our vet has commented on her lovely nature and how nice it was to handle a Shetland that wasn't trying to kick his shins or bite his knee!

BUT

She has sweetitch, manageable by Boett rug which she loves.
She had a mild attack of laminitis earlier this year which we think may be Cushings related, although this is still to be investigated. She has no problems with wearing a muzzle and has so far made no attempt to remove it.
I also think she is developing a spavin.

I feel she is too bright and too young to be a companion pony as she enjoys doing things. So would people with small children be interested?

Personally I wouldn't, having already had a pony with Cushings-related laminitis, I have no desire to repeat the experience again. Laminitis is such a distressing condition to witness, and requires lots of careful management and hard work to prevent another attack. My little laminitic cost me more money and was harder work than looking after any of the other horses I have had!

The sweet itch and spavin wouldn't put me off though, and I am sure you will find someone who hasn't experienced the distress of having a Cushings related laminitic will be more open-minded than I am!

Yes. I think so.

It can be hard to find safe and trustworthy small childrens ponies, and if your shetland would fit the bill, then I think there's a lot of people who would be prepared to manage his health issues if they were confident he could be the perfect 1st pony for their child.
You'd need to make sure he went to someone who was fully aware how to manage his health properly, especially the cushings related lami.

i wouldnt me and my dauhter have been heart broken taking on a shetland with a history of laminitus i wouldnt do it again there are lots of healthy ponies out there just takes time to find them
