The owner of the horse that I have looked after for the last 2 and a half years is selling him. He's around 15.2hh, cob, bay, 3 white socks, white blaze, he's ride and drive. He is the most honest, genuine, reliable horse I have ever met and I am completely devastated that he's being sold. The owner wants £2000 for him or £1200 if I buy him. I'm not prepared to part with any money for him as I've already spent £2500 on him since I've looked after him and I can't afford to keep him by myself, I would need a sharer. He is currently lame (lameness issues I'm not prepared to discuss openly on the forum). Neither does he have a passport. All my friends are telling me that the owner will be unable to sell a lame horse that has no passport but I'm worried that he will end up with an unsavory owner who will pump him full of bute then hammer the crap out of him.

Does anyone have any ideas of how to get this horse a good home he's given me so much and if I could afford to keep him I would. I have given this horse my every waking hour since I met him and love him more than I have ever loved anyone or anything. Sadly I really can't afford to keep him, I'm already working three jobs to pay for him, I cannot physically do any more for him than I am already.

PLEASE DO NOT GIVE ME A BARAGE OF ABUSE AND CRITICISM, I HAVE DONE EVERYTHING I CAN FOR THIS HORSE.

Please can anyone help this magnificent horse?

he looks lovely. i'm so sorry to hear that the owner's determined to sell and being so greedy... owner really should give him to you after all you've done and paid out, by the sounds of it.
the harsh truth, which i think you should tell the owner, is that there's really only one place a lame horse is going to end up if s/he tries to sell it, especially for that price... and that is heaven. or, the meat man, if you really want to hit him/her with it. people don't BUY lame horses, there's enough that might go wrong, without buying one that is known to have a problem bad enough to make it lame.. whatever the cause is, really.
sorry to be so horribly blunt, and i hope i won't get shot down in flames for it. *hugs*

Did you have him on loan? Is that why you spent so much on him? anyway I don't think she will be able to sell a lame horse and can't sell without a passport , the only way he would be sold is through a sale and even then you need a passport

To be honest..I don't think she;'d get that for him, though he looks a lovely chap and is a stunner - I also think she ought to give him/sell him for like £50 tops to you after all you've done and spent on him.

I have a 11 year old Connie x TB who has a 1/10 unlevel/lameness, its purely mechanical due to an injury she had last summer (her hock collapsed), and although she is painfree and therefore can be ridden and I've had several vets and tests done and they all say she can do whatever I like (within reason, though I only have her in light work, if i was ever to part for her, I wouldn't be looking for over £500 for her if that. She shouldn't need treatment again.

I don't know whether your lovely lad needs treatment for his lameness, if so I don't think many people would want to take him on when they know they are gonna have to pay vet fees.

I don't mean that nastily, one bit, but to be honest I think trying to sell him, especially at that price, would be very risky, I'd be concerned someone would buy him, pump him full of bute then sell him to a novice who doesn't know better.

I don't mean anything nastily to you, I feel so sorry for you and I'm sorry his owner is determined to sell him..

THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING.

I think he will take whatever money he is offered for the horse in all honesty, I also believe that he thinks by telling me he wants £2000 but to me it would be £1200 he thinks I will buy him because I love him. He didn't bank on me having the strength to walk away (If I had the money I'd pay it just to keep the horse and continue to make him happy).

If I did end up with him and found that he wasn't able to be ridden ever again, I know this view is harsh but I would have him sent to the horsy heaven in the skies. That would be far better for him than being pushed from pillar to post for the rest of his life.

Speaking to the vet yesterday its going to be a starting price of £300 to fix him. Which I would have been prepared to borrow the money and put the time and care in for the horse if the owner would be prepared to give him to me.

I'm just desperate to find him a good home, thats the least I can do for him after the amazingly wonderful two and half years pleasure he has given me.

Am I pathetic for loving an animal this much!

No, I'd feel exactly the same!

Couldn't you talk to the owner and explain the chances of him going to a good home are very slim and that you'd put in the time, effort and money into trying to get him better if he'd give him to you?

Worth a try..Or maybe a horse rescue centre would take him on, or maybe they'd take him and put him down, if they're able to buy him , I don't know..#

Good luck

It would depend upon whats wrong with him. I often buy horses that have something wrong with them and nures them or turn them away for a few months. For people who have their own places it does not matter because you are not paying out for livery.

I often buy horses who don't have passports. It is not againstthe law to BUY a horse without a passport, it is against the law to SELL without a passport, but how many people do you hear of getting done for it?

Itis easy to geta passport, at auctions you can geta horse passported on the day of sale.

If you chose to spend so much money on the horse, than that is your business. If someone bought my horses a sack of carrots, I wouldn't deduct two quid from the price of the horse if I sold it to them... because itis their choice to buy something for the horse.

What a horrible situation, but like other people have said, the person can't sell the horse without a passport. As such, it may be worth explaining all this to the owner and asking if you could have him on permanent loan or something? But then, if you couldn't afford to pay for him anyway, that wouldn't really be fair on the horse.

Like someone else has said, I think you'll either have to ask the owner to be involved in the selling process, so he goes to a good home, or allow him to horsey heaven. I'm sorry. I hope it works out for you. Let us know how it goes.

Well first of all the owner is the owner and like anyone in the horse world, can ask whatever she wants for him....doesnt mean she will get it, but then how many people do get the silly prices horses are advertised for these days!

Second, you have already said if he couldnt be ridden you would have him put down, so surely its very important WHY he is lame, as there is no point you taking him on and struggling to keep him if you are going to put him to sleep if the lameness does mean end of ridden career.

My advice, dont do anything more for the horse, let the owner struggle it out, she may get fed up and once she realises he isnt selling, give/sell him to you cheaply.

However you have already said you cant afford to keep him, and you woud have to borrow the money to get him sorted out with the vet, so I dont think you should be thinking of taking him on anyway if you cant afford him, it doesnt make sense.

What a nice looking little horse!

I know you have invested a lot so far, but any of that money that has been paid as a share arrangement doesn't count, that was the price you paid to have the use of the horse, if you have paid extra over and above that then, unless the owner asked you to buy things, I assume you have chosen to do that so again you can't really use it as any kind of bargaining chip.

I don't know what is wrong with the horse and a good deal would depend whether it can definitely be fixed. If it could then finding the money to buy the horse and put it right would then give you a horse that is worth around £3000, AND you call the shots on what happens to it. You could sell on but you would be choosing the next home and hopefully find a nice one - you might also get enough back to cover your costs and offset a little of the money you have already spent.

If the lameness is not easily resolved then my best advice to you is to walk away, it is a shame but I don't see what else you can do.

I was kind of thinking along the same lines as you S_B. It doesnt sound to me like you can afford him if you are honest with yourself. I would walk away now, very hard and soul destroying to do, but I have been there and done it and survived.

BTW in horsey terms a £300 vets bill is not really very big!!!

Why does the person want to sell him at this stage if you have been looking after him for 2 1/2 years?
And paying by the sounds of it all of his vets bills etc?
They can't really expect someone to buy a lame horse for that sort of money surely.
I must admit you can't even ask for a permanent loan either cos you are struggling to pay now!
But you also couldn't get a sharer either because of the lameness issues, people just won't take on a lame horse, it is too much of a risk.
Perhaps you should seek advice from ILPH they maybe able to help you help confidentialy in what you can possibly do.
I have know doubt you love this horse, but you can only do what you can do and no more!
Don't beat yourself up over this.
Phone the ILPH and see if they can offer any advice then lets go from there.
Hope that helps.x

Already spoken to all the charities. One Charity is prepared to help support us to stay together. I have somewhere to keep him that I won't be charged and that YO is interested in sharing him with me as well.

I started paying for the horse because the owner stopped paying me for the things he needed. He used to pay for essential like field rent, worming, shoeing, hay and I would pay for hardfeed, rugs etc. I have always taken the cheapest option of everything for the owner including going barefoot. REMEMBER THIS HORSE WAS NOT ON LOAN TO ME. There was never a formal agreement (more fool me - for the love of the horse). All I have done is given the horse the very best life that I could because of the life he had before I came along.

There are many people in the immediate area that are as desperate as I am to see us stay together and the offers of help if I do end up with him have been overwhelming. If I talk about the kindness from others in the last few days then I will cry!!!

I know its my own stupid fault for paying what I've paid but what else could I do, I had to do it for the horse. Maybe I should have walked away a long time ago. Maybe I'm an idiot. All I know is that I love him dearly and still want the best that I can get for him.

If it turned out that with the help I would sign him over to a charity to ensure that he has a good home for the rest of his life. But after speaking to the vet and one of the other charities they were impressed "by my mature attitude to putting him down if he has no ridden or driven career ahead of him". I maintain that it is better that than him being abused or pushed from pillar to post for the rest of his life.

I posted the thread as I was interested in your opinions on whether or not he would sell. I kind of feel like you're all saying I've only got myself to blame for the situation I'm in! I know that, please don't emphasise it as I feel bad enough.

I think he'd struggle to sell a horse without a passport...... or if he would fail a vetting, well to anyone reputable anyway.

Horrid situation to be in Michelle..... hope something turns up for you!

There's someone who lives locally that will report the entire conversation on this forum back to the owner! And gossip it around the entire neighbourhood and I'm sure revel with delight in the fact that I'm losing the horse! She's not joined the thread yet but give it a few hours and she'll be sticking her nose in!

Offer the owner 500 quid (meat money) for him. In his current condition, he would be pushed to get more than this for him at an auction.

Or, get a proper permanant loan agreement drawn up.

You might have to bide your time, ie, let people come and view him and walk away. You could send a load of your mates for 'viewings' and then they can shake their heads and walk away... just to drive the message home.

The horse looks and sounds like a pleasant sort, see if you can get him a job as a field companion whilst he recovers and you get your affairs in order.

I don't know how old you are, but if you got a Saturday job, or an extra job waitressing or a couple of nights a week working in a pub or something, you could easily afford him. Christmas is coming and loads of places take on extra staff. Very little is impossible if you set your mind on it. Or, even go in to business for yourself, do cleaning or ironing for people. You would be suprised how many horsey people work more than 1 job, or live frugaly just to keep their horses.

There are many ways to skin a cat!

Does the owner realise the amount of money you have paid out?
If so give him an itemised bill for everything, include reciepts if you can.......if he wont pay tell him you will take the horse instead, then find him a turnout for a few months.
He looks a lovely sort.......good luck.
I am looking for a horse like him, can you PM me to tell me why he is lame.

Already work three jobs!!! Its not him thats costing me a fortune. I've lost 5 stones between March and October and its the clothes that made me end up in this mess going from a size 20 to 8-10 in such a short space of time. By the end of Jan my financial situation will have improved somewhat. Just need to be patient!!!

i feel very sorry for your situation and wish your horse well.

as for sticking nose in,well dear, this is an open forum and you must want your buisness discussed or you would not post it all on here,is that not so?

also,as for gossiping it around the neighbourhood, well this is untrue, i keep my ponies on their own, lead a busy life and have not seen anyone horsey around here to speak to for months.

and why on earth would someone`revel` in the fact that a person was losing thier horse for god sake.

get a life.

I am sorry you feel i was being nasty to you in my comments.
Nothing in the slightess came into my mind, infact i was trying to work out if there was anything i can do for you!
I feel i might be quite local to you as you have pictures of cricklade show on here!
PM me if you feel i can help in some way!
I am trying to think of sum ideas now for you!
Keep your chin up!
I belive everyone on here has your's and the horse's best interest at heart, please don't lose heart!

Ooooh no I didn't think you were being nasty at all. When I put QR, I'm actually replying to everyone on the thread. I think I've already said the kindness of others has been over whelming and your kind offer of help has brought tears to my eyes! Will PM you.
Thanks
Michelle

He looks lovely - I really hope you can stay together. Is he being kept with you? If so and you have no formal arrangement and the owner isn't paying for him you could report him as abandoned and he could be picked up by the ILPH. Would the owner let u pay for him over a few months?

If you really want him offer her £400 in cash, basically meat money really, and guarantee him a home for life, she sounds like she is playing on your feelings to me.

I really feel for you a similar thing happened to me.
I'd talk to the owner about buying him end of Jan. You never know by then his lameness may have cleared up or if it hasn't they may want to part with him for less because of this and also becasue the winter is dragging on. I really do wish the best of luck to you, I bet you have worked hard on this horse and I hope that the owner can see that someone like yourself has his best interest at heart and doesn't just see pound signs.

Just another idea, why don't you ask a friend to try and buy him (for you secretly!) and really pick on the fact it is lame and knock the price down?
