Yes as long as it does the job.
As I event, I wouldn't bother me what it did, as long as it performs when I was onboard!
So I guess it depends what you want it for. For pleasure etc.. then maybe it could be a prob, if you compete and thats the reason you own horses then maybe not a prob.
If I had my own yard, yes. But I wouldn't if the horse was to be kept at livery... can't be doing with the hassle of other people complaining because they worry their horse will 'copy'.
Yes, I don't have a problem with it, especially if it ticks all my boxes in every other respect. There are some cases where I might be wary, if I wanted an endurance horse for example, the potential for ulcers in a horse with high energy/stamina requirements might put me off, and for dressage or showing there is a tendency to overdevelop under the neck that might not look good; but for RC, jumping, low level dressage, hacking t wouldn't worry me at all.
The only absolute no-no for me would be windsucking and crib biting in a brood mare, while I don't generally believe it to be learned behaviour, I think there is an exception for foals and I wouldn't choose to introduce windsucking in that environment
I did and she was a star, If the horse looks as if its what you want it could well be worth looking at. Sellers have to lower the price a bit because of it so you can often get a bargain.
Also depends on when and where the horses does it, I took the collar off mine, and with ad lib hay when she was in it reduced a lot.
my horse crib bites a lot, but he's perfect in everyway for what i want. i have a collar on him which means he can't suck in the air so he doesn't try much with it on. TBH if it was my yard i wouldn't bother about putting the collar on but its not and i don't want the farmer having a fit about his fence panels lol
i would, my friend has a little tb, that does it and i would snap him up in an instance if she ever decieded to sell him! he also panics when hes tied up, box walks and weeves!!
Yes I dont have a problem with it.
However, just make sure if you are on a livery yard that the YO doesnt mind. As a horse was purchased that windsucked and our YO (my old yard) was not at all happy!
Yes - I did and I don't regret it. I have also found the Coligone almost stops it completely - I think the only reason he does it now is that it is a habit. We did have collar but I stopped using it because he learnt to do it with it on!!!
He's lovely and I would buy him again - but - I agree with everyone about making sure the YO doesn't mind. Because ours did.
yes as long as i could identify why it cribs or at least reduce the amount of time it cribbed. First horse was a windsucker and given the chance to be a horse again and allowed out in the field and given ad lib hay etc he rarely windsucked except for before feed time. Oh and personally would never ever use a collar.
Also am one that believes a horse will only copy if there is a trigger. Whether than be diet leading to build up of acid or stress or both. Goof was stabled with 7 other horses and ponies of varying ages including youngsters and over 3 years none never even once copied. And on the same vein on my current yard is an old horse that cribs and has done all the time I have been on the yard (5.5 years) now 14 other horses on that yard can easily see it (open american barn type stables) and have ample oppourtunity to copy it at any given time. Add the fact foals, yearlings, youngsters, breakers (very common), reschooling horses, hunters, hacks, competition horses, horses on complete box rest and broodmares have all been on that yard and been stabled near this horse (think in total over 100 horses have been near by for over a week about 40 for months+) and not one has copied. There is another horse on the same yard that came as a weaver and nope none of the other horses have ever copied!!
so yeah I would normally ignore the fact a horse windsucked other than maybe to knock down price a bit (as vices are afterall declareable!!!).
