Would you change a horses name?

Mollie was Marti when I got her. I changed her name, but didn't bother to do so on the passport so she's still Marti on that. She's never going to be shown so her yard name's the only one she's known by.

I honestly can't see how anyone can believe that the word we give to identify an animal has a direct effect on that animal's fate, health, future accidents etc. But then I'm not a superstitious person, so it seems a very odd idea to me. :p:D

I'm going to bring in soon which will involve going to the gate and shouting La La at my rescue mare ...:o:o Got to be the worst name going. Thinking of taking her to shows next year but her stage name will be Lola!

I plan to show this mare and if anyone thinks I am allowing a commentator to announce, Mrs xxxxxxxxx riding Hairy Mary, they can think again.

Oh my goodness, I would die if my horse was called Hairy Mary!!
Kudos for changing it! :D

I have never changed my horses names, then again my first pony Brambles was a bay cob who was terribly shaggy when I first got him and he was forever getting twigs and leaves matted into his mane and tail so the name suited him!
My second horse was Diamond Abstract, aka. Diamond. He certainly didn't behave like a Diamond most of the time!! :p
But he was an Irish Sports Horse and the Diamond line is very prominent there so I didn't want to change it, I think it was nice that him and all of his relations had Diamond in the name so I didn't want to alter it! Although I am sentimental like that :o
My current pony is called Killakeen Sandy, aka. Sandy. Given his colouring it is SUCH a generic name, but it certainly suits him! However I am considering changing his passported name to something a bit more flashy!

I once remember seeing a horse for sale when horse hunting, a gorgeous 16.3 chestnut warmblood called Shrek! That name would certainly have been changed!

No unless it was really ridiculous.
We do have a Fjord called Norman but he seems to suit it. He also gets The Norminator or Normie.
By the way we have a dog called Zack which sounds lack the Dutch zak - meaning Scrotum! We have had a few funny looks when out walking and calling his name. :D:eek:

I would, and indeed, have. My old cob's name was Curly when I bought him. He's been Jasper for 13 years now, and it doesn't seem to have done us any harm ;)

I got my new boy a few weeks ago and his breeder called him sean, but I wasn't keen so I changed it to Murphy

AdorableAlice, I'm in a hotel restaurant waiting for my food & I snorted when I read the Hairy Mary name - just got a few funny looks! And there was me thinking I was being subtle with my bad manners!!!!

Changed my New Forest's name from Bubbles to Rioja and touch wood she's never had a problem!! Hairy Mary is great can't think why you'd want to change that! LOL

Never been my decision to make but I would ... I would have changed my old instructor's horse from Big Boy (he was, in every department, and it did cause occasional hilarity) and I would change the name of the Lulu that I know because it couldn't suit her less, but maybe that's me being over-serious :p

Hairy Mary is - er - a bit unfortunate :D

It must be said that poor Bree on occasion gets referred to as hairy hoss.

I'm really superstitious so wouldn't change a name. However my new boy is called Dazzle and I really dont like his name (although it suits him) so have resorted to nick naming him Mr D. So his name is still Dazzle, I just don't use it that often......that's not bad luck........is it?

Just don't choke !!

If the clippers pack up the name would suit her, but the plan is either Search for a Star or if she really comes together, open classes with Hoy's qualifiers.

Could you just imagine being in the international arena with a Hairy Mary !

I have changed 3 horses names; 2 have been riding school ponies and we all agreed they didn't suit their names - one was called Broom and people are always looking for brooms (brushes) on the yard so it would be confusing. Both ponies have been answering happily to their new names for years. The 3rd horse came to us last year with a dreadful (in our opinion) registered name so we paid to change it but retained his stable name - so far no problems.

:o:o That sounds like one of those disturbing dreams, you know, like the one where you get to work and realise you've got no clothes.

You do have those dreams too don't you..... ?

:o Just me then. :o

I personally wouldn't change a name.
I would however find a nickname - on their character.

For example here are a few horses names that have a few different one;

William aka Wilski
Dora aka Dosy or Dora the Explora
Neddy aka Nedward, Nedster and Ned
Jerry aka J
Lilly aka the ginger Ninja
Chloe aka the big Mumma
Poppy aka Pops

Omg I'm actually sitting here laughing out loud at the name hairy Mary !!!!
My daughters ponies stable name is star very commen name but have to say she really is a super star so it's staying although her passported has been changed from starlight to Celtic star, I actually prefer the old one starlight but I'm to stingy to pay for a name change(she's bsja reg to) so its staying Celtic star!

I've changed a stable name on a few. 'Ratonera' changed to Mouse ( it means mouse hole in spanish anyway...and Mouse is way cuter than Rat!), and Heidi changed to No Name...only because the owner never actually told us her name ( this was before passports!) and then went off to Australia for 6 months, so by the time he got back 'No Name' had stuck!

My mare is called Jaz, but her old owner had Downs Syndrome so chose her show name.
"Sweetheart Treacle Tart" is what she came up with! :o
Imagine that in the show ring; "Miss xxxxxxx riding Sweetheart Treacle Tart"
Thankfully I dont show her so dont have to worry- it was a bit embarrasing when the vet came up the first time!!! :D

Come to think my rescue called La La made my friend cry with laughter. I didn't understand until explained as I just thought teletubby- I think hairy mary and La La may be victims of male breeder naming syndrome - or taking the mick as we call it:o

I like silly names- they're there for a reason.

Reg's name can be unfortunate, as commentators will insist on running the horse's name then the rider's name without saying 'and' in between. "Something's Up Alice..." is the usual phrase as they tail off, realising what they've said!

But silly names are fun. Would never ever change them, just because there's usually a story and I like that idea!

Hairy Mary, that made me laugh. Unfortunately am very superstitious so would never change my horses name or my dogs. All mine have had nick names though.

I don't change registered names as the prefix tells you who bred the pony and either how good or naff their bloodlined are. It's kind of a shop name whereby if you like what you see you visit and maybe buy, if you don't like you don't go.

My youngsters get called daft things and don't get proper names until they are 4 or 5. Rsins started off as Munchkin, in his next home they called him Andy, when I got him back I just called him Rains.

Most of my others have kept part of their registered names, Jasper, Flint, Charm etc. Some have registered names, stable names and silly name such as Jeff who is properly called Jefertiti and his silly name is The Hocamaffe.

I'd change names if it really didnt suit or I didnt like it.

I would. My Mum's pestering me to change Ned's name to Edward! But he's just Ned, that's just who he is :P

I would change it if I really hated it though (I've known a horse called Stinky. No thanks!)

Id never change the registered name or drop a prefix, ever, I hate that :o But stable names are fair game imo :)
