Dont know whether to clip out my pregnant mare. She is a dutch warmblood who is an extremely good doer! She is so hairy already and is boiling and itchy a lot of the time. She is stabled at nite and would def be rugged so just wondered on peoples thoughts? I know folk usually clip to make things easier for riding with regard to reducing sweating etc but would it be ok to do it to make her more comfy?

I would leave her un clipped and unrugged unless of course it got really cold. The weather is freaky at the moment but I expect it will soon change.

No I wouldn't, I would leave her hairy ... it's going to get a lot colder

Why would she definitely be rugged, if she is is already getting warm?

I meant she would def be rugged if she were clipped. Not sure my land will hold up to the horses being out all winter tho. I could keep her in unrugged and unclipped tho. Just feel bad for her being so hot and itchy. I curry comb her every day and bags of hair comes out but she always seems uncomfy. Thought maybe I cud clip once then leave it to grow back in in time for the colder weather?

Don't worry, it is just the change in season, winter is just around the corner ... leave her coat on, she will thank you then.

I think you just have itchy clipper hands like me ... nothing is safe when I have clippers in my hands ... even the dogs hide

if she is hot and itchy and would be more comfortable clipped, then clip her. if she in at night (or out) would only require a lite rain rug! best to keep them happy and do what suits the individual!!

yes i would clip a broadmare if it ment she would be morse comfortable. just remember they tend to be warmer when they are in foal and need less clipping. i clipped my in foal mare last year to keep her comfortable

In a word, No.
Personally i do not agree with the ethics of clipping a horse that does not need clipping. If they get sweaty when ridden that's totally different, that's my opinion anyway

if she is a good doer and is hairy by nateure why would you want to rug her up? Leave her as she is and give her hay ad lib. Sorry, I think you are worrying too much-let her be. Digesting hay is the equiv of internal central heating so she certainly wont suffer. Own of my livery owners asked me if I had clippers as he wanted his old doing nowt but eating and shitting stabled horse clipped. The idea was then to bung half a dozen rugs, blankets etc on him to keep him warm from his clip???????

I said "no". My oldies are given hay ad lib (stabled) and are rugged as nec.
