Would you consider giving a horse away?

I would advise against it, something free is perhaps not valued by the person as well as them having to pay for it.

For the horses sake, you need to find the right person who will love it for how it is and be prepared to maintain the upkeep. I dont think giving away is a good answer. Personally I would rather have a horse put down, than worry about its future.

I've seen your ad on Project Horses. TBH - my first reaction was that he was over-priced. If you really want to sell him fast - reduce to price drastically and reserve the right to vet all homes. After all, you have every right to decide who buys him. If I was looking, I would pay about £850 for him. There are loads of ex-racehorses that are cheap. The blind in one eye would not bother me at all, but if it puts people off - then they are obviously not right for him.

Yes I know he's overpriced - going to put the price down today to under £1k not including tack I think..... x

Can you not give it a week or so and see if you get any response? Reducing it so quickly might put people off as they will wonder why you are so desperate to be rid of him IMO.

What did you pay for him (if you don't mind my asking?)

I didn't get any response over the weekend so I think that's probably an indication.

Paid £2500 but didn't know he was blind then.....

QR -

There are a lot of horses over here who are blind in one eye - almost exclusively ex-racehorses. I would personally never buy a horse who was blind. Many people will say that it wouldn't put them off, however I don't believe that. If our own horses were to become blind then yes I'm sure we would keep them.

If you find someone you know who would consider taking him then by all means give him to them.....but not for free! Always, always take some money, even if it is just £50....that transfers the ownership legally.

If he was mine I think I would stick out for £1,000 - I have no idea what you have him advertised for but I am aware of what you paid for him and I know you would be losing money at the figure above.

Best of luck.

Stimps there IS a home out there for him. I *gave* Splodge away (well I got £1k, but that was akin to giving him away as I had sales livery to pay and I had paid £6500 for him

) because I needed to get rid and not incur any more expense. However, he was then sold on (for what I bought him for) less than 2 weeks later, so be VERY careful.

Bl**dy hell!! Really?? That was a bit cheeky, wasn't it?? How did that happen, how did you find out??
I'd be a bit cross!!!

I wouldn't ordinarily just give a horse away. Having said that though I would've happily given Evie to a very good friend of mine in the UK if she'd been able to take her at the time

As it is, I sold her for very little money to someone who tried to rip me off

i had 5 horses last summer but was moving them to a more expensive yard so could only take 3.
i sold jack my 18.2hh 14 year old gelding for £890 with tack and rugs to a local lady who loves him to bits, she was the second person to see him.
and i sold my sons welsh b 5 year old mare who was well bred for £450 only to see her advertised for £2,900 ono 2 weeks later.
so it can go either way.
good luck

hi
my cousins horse had an leg problem (cant for the life of me remember what!) however he could still be ridden etc. They didnt want to sell him cheaply as worried he would get in the wrong hands. anyway... they found him a loving home after advertising as a permanent loan and then sold him to the lady for a penny.
The penny meant that money had exchanged hands and she could go to university knowing he wouldnt suddenly come back. everyone was happy!
i may not have explained this very well but im sure you get the idea

The secret to finding a good permanent home for your horse is to thoroughly check out the new potential home, yard and owner first and work out if everything they say adds up.

Of course - will be asking to do that - anyone who objects can't have his best interests at heart....I don't want to turn up and be a critical biiaattch but just want to make sure he'll be happy.

NOOOOOOOO!
Don't give him away, he is lovely, someone will happily pay for him!
I bought my boy hobdayed, with a joint problem that makes him lame just looking at hard ground and I paid £1750!
So many horses out there are blind in one eye and can still compete and do everything a full sighted horse can.
He has so much to give don't give him away

I sold the horse that threw me off and broke me neck for £500 - after 2 months of schooling livery!

He has only been on the market 4 days you nutter!

I have given a horse away and i have received a horse for free as well!!!

Nothing was wrong with either of them, i just didn't get on with my first horse and we had loads of trouble selling her as no-one could get her going (you had to learn the nack). Someone down the yard fell in love with her and started riding her for me, my mare started neighing at her all the time and they had such a great bond that i decided to give her to them. She is still with them now 10 years leter!!!!

Then i started loaning a pony, was meant to be half loan but ended up as full loan as i was getting phone calls everyday saying his owner hadn't been down to do him and no-one could get hold of her etc. I even took on her shetland as that was just being left too. I didn't hear from her for months and then one day out of the blue i got a phone call saying i could have him. She sent me a bill of sale (even though he was free) and i haven't heard from her since. I got to big for him after 4years and sold him on and he is still there 7 years on.

I spose i have been quite lucky really.

Now on the other hand i wouldn't give a horse away but then thats maybe coz i have to pay for them now instead of my mum and dad

I think you should drop the price as if i am honest the blindness would put me off and i also think you should advertise him more places than project horses as i didn't get a lot of response from there when i advertised one of my horses. I got more response from horsemart.

I've twice given horses away and both times it's worked out very well. That said, in both cases the people had ridden the horses for some time and effectively had them on loan/lease - in one case to the point where I felt the person had effectively bought the horse on time. I wouldn't give a horse away to someone I didn't know but personally or with absolutely iron clad references but I felt good about both my situations because the people really wanted the specific horses, they had the money and time to care for them, and both would have been tough to rehome.

If is comes up I would think about it carefully but I wouldn't rule it out. Sometimes peace of mind is worth a whole lot.

Well I have been considering loaning him out for a year then getting him back next year. By that time I should be sorted financially and would probably put him on DIY and do everything myself!
