Wasn't this the one who died in sad circumstances? could open a bit of a can of worms...

Explain?

If the previous owner kept in touch with you, then yes I would contact them. If they didn't keep in touch, then I definitely wouldn't. I have not kept in touch with the new owners of the couple of horses I have sold and if either of them had been pts, to be honest I'd rather not know.

You can put me straight if I am wrong but I thought this was the one who had been attacked by a dog?
getting in touch with a previous owner and telling them their horse had a fine life and eventually died in its sleep or whatever couldn't harm any previous owner and might be appreciated by them. to tell somebody that their horse was injured and had to be PTS( and I am digging this from the hazy corners of my memory) may cause upset, and since you don't know them, you have no way of knowing how they would cope with that information - it may override whatever good things you can tell them about the horse or how much he is missed. After all, they are bound to ask...

I would - perhaps a letter with your memories and a few photos - also a contact number so they have the choice to contact you if they wish x

I'm with the the watcher on this one, I'd leave it be, they probably have happy fond memories of them and I have no wish to cause them any pain. Nothing can be changed now and he was a lovely chap who was given the best care and attention by you.

Me too. I think it may cause distress.

Think i am with the watcher and Alibabe too.

I would be really upset if someone told me my pony that i sold on died in those circumstances. It would be bad enough if it was just due to old age but to know it was from a dog attack would be worse.

My memories of him are happy one and even though i do wonder what he is getting up to if i knew something like that had happened to him then thats all i would think about.

I'd want to know.. I'm trying to find my shettie's mum that I sold several years back and TBH I'd want to know whatever the outcome. At least they will know he was so well loved and looked after...

I would want to know. At the end of the day - most horses go through accident or illness and don't slip quietly away like us.

Of course they'll be sad - but not more so than poor old JJ who cried enough tears for everyone. Imagine bumping in them one day and then enquiring about the horse. Far better to get the information unprompted imo.

I would contact them and let them know.

A friend of mine sold a horse and only a few months later recieved a text from another friend saying she had noticed that the horse was listed as deceased on the bsja website, which was obviously not the ideal way to find out.

If it was me who used to own the horse I would be grateful of a letter with a few photos, and if contact details were included then it would be possible to make contact if I wanted.

I would let it be, as far as they are concerned the horse is happy and healthy and they have good memories. Why upset them? They will only imagine the worst and think what if.
I wouldnt want to know

i would not contact them it would upset me if i knew my horse who i had sold on was dead! I would rather think that he was happy healthy and well looked after!

I wouldn't. I think a lot of owners get their closure when they have sold the horse, and it could be unwanted information on their part if they have already come to terms with him 'going'. I am always upset to hear horses I have ridden/cared for, or even just knew, have died, although logically I know that a lot of them must have passed on, sheer age if nothing else.
