Hello :)

Just curious for opinions,26 year old Welsh cob who’s now pretty much retired (odd wander down the lane) due to copd.
He’s now got mild arthritis in his hocks understandable as he’s been an incredible horse and at almost 27 I think we have done very well
Spoken to vets who have advised to pop him on painkillers for the winter due to cold and decreased movement (they have advised equoxx however I’m opting for Bute satchets simply as I go onto mat leave and I’m trying to be sensible with my money though I understand equinox is kinder on their gut)
Anyway he’s on maxaflex for his joints but is it worth keeping him on this if he’s on a painkiller a day? I understand the difference but not sure if it’s worth me carrying on with the supplement

Do you feel the joint supplement made an appreciable difference to him?
If so, definitely carry it on, because painkiller (whichever you opt for), is doing a different job.
I’ve got one on Harpagyl in genuine preference to Bute, but obviously it’s horses for courses and what suits yours is the principle. Good luck!

I agree with your choice to go straight to Bute. I think at that age comfort is more importand than future what if's that may never happen.
Joint supplements I always find a tough one. I use one and often have over the years but I do supsect i do it more for me than the difference it makes to the horse. I believe the one you are using it supposed to be pretty good though, some are an utter waste of money.

Take your horse off the supplement, if you don't notice or feel a difference then don't bother with it, but if it works then continue it.

My physio says no there isn’t any point as the supplement won’t reverse any of the damage…but there is some evidence for some ingredients like Boswellia reduce inflammation so I don’t think it can hurt! I use a supplement for my mare who has hock OA, she has been injected too with Arthramid so technically there probably isn’t a lot of point but I think it will help with some of the inflammation and stiffness in other unmediated joints…so I still use it x

I stopped the joint supplement once we started on a satchet of Danilon daily. I decided to put him on the Danilon as the joint supplement wasn't really working any more. I am now looking at cartrophen to try and help manage overall stiffness as my boy has arthritis in mutiple joints now I think and I'm reluctant to medicate each individual joint.
