I know it is long but would YOU cut it???? I think that it would be easier because it does get tangly..... but it must be a very effective fly swat.... or would it be less effective because its so heavy???

He does carry it high though when he is ridden, so wouldnt want it to look silly shorter. I dont do any type of serious showing so that doesnt count, but at the show pictured I was told by show sec (who is a friend) that I should chop a foot off of it

Does it look better this length???

My horse's tail reached the ground (16.3) and everytime he got up from rolling, he would tear some hairs out.

I cut about 2 inches off. I wouldnt cut more than 2 inches of that fantastic tail as it is his fly swot, an aid for balance and communication. I do not like short tails, prefer the au naturale look.

Its a magnificiant tail your horse has. I used mane and tail condition and a human paddle brush on my highland's tail

Cut it about 6inches just to tidy it up, if it gets much longer he'll be standing on it and ripping bits out on things in the field. If he were mine I would be chopping a foot off it in the winter though, the thought of all that mud! My ponies all had tiny tails in winter that grew back just right for showing in the summer.

If you were showing him seriously the 'chop a foot off' suggestion would be appropriate.

People here pay HUNDREDS of dollars for false tails to get the effect that you have for free!

If it were me I'd cut in stages hun - take 2 inches off for starters and see how it looks and then if you feel you can go shorter take another 2 and so on.

I've got a cob and I use him for M & M therefore can't cut anything off! His tail needs a good chop, but not until oct

Lol.

I like the length in the last pic! Horses with really short tails look funny. His looks good.

I will give it a trim tomorrow and then perhaps I will be able to get a brush through it....

Definitely cut a few inches off. I've taken just a few inches off our Connemara and it's so much easier to groom and doesn't drag in the mud anymore. Since the weight has come off she's carrying it higher so they must feel something.

I love big thick tails and I like the natural look. But taking off 2 or 3 inches would make it look thicker and healthier. I would take an inch off at a time if you're not sure and give it a day or two to see if you think it needs more. They always carry their tails higher than you think.
