Hoping I'm ok to post this as my last post was reported although I wasn't advertising as have interested person lined up already:( So we have someone who wants to rent our 8 empty stables for a business. They are interested in doing sales/ reschooling livery but of course this means more horses coming and going. Would it be worth getting every new horse that comes tested for strangles or do you think this is over the top. We have already agreed that all horses need to be vaccinated for tetanus and influenza. Just want to make sure that our horses aren't put at risk. New horses coming on yard could be in separate block and grazing away from ours!

Thanks! Guess that is true! Think I'm over thinking everything and trying to make sure that everything stays perfect on our little yard. Haha - I am a natural worrier when it comes to my horses!

We take in training horses and sales horses and I don't ask for that. All 'outside' horses have their own space on my farm so aren't in contact with any of the regular horses who reside here. Most of the training/sales horses I know anyway and know where they're coming from.

Sorry but i disagree, its not just a chance you take, you can try to minimise the risk by doing what the op suggests, if youre out at shows, hacking etc you can pretty much keep yourself, to yourself unless youre stabled, but again risks can be minimised, if youre bringing in horses that are staying for a period of time that will be grazing your fields and being worked with as normal by your staff, or someone in your environment, using and handling shared equipment it might well be the prudent thing to do, but it will be time consuming waiting for results before the horses come and costly.

I guess what you'd be asking for is that any potential incomers would go in to isolation, remain there until the test results came back & then came straight in to your yard - after all no point in testing if the horse then socialises as it could pick it up after the test !
Would I go through that to send my horse to a yard? No. Would other people? Probably not.

I think the only solution will be to keep any new arrivals in isolation! We were planning to do that anyway! Just had a conversation with vet who came out today to do vaccinations and they agreed with me that every horse coming on yard should be vaccinated for influenza and tetanus! I forgot to ask them about strangles and other virus' though hence, I thought I would ask on here! Still can't believe how many people don't vaccinate! And they are definitely not the people we want on yard anyway!
