Actually, Halal and Kosher slaughter done PROPERLY is one of the most welfare friendly meats. Their laws insist the animal feels no threat or fear before hand (and their slaughter houses are build with that in mind) and when done properly with a very sharp knife and good technique it is VERY humane. They should have no idea of what's about to happen and the slit throat causes such an instant drop in blood pressure that they 'faint' instantly. Stunning on the other hand doesn't always cause unconsciousness............

I have slaughter all species of animals (cows, sheep, pig and deer) and seen Halal slaughter and when done PROPERLY it's all a calm, dignified affair.
The trouble is that it is often not done 'properly' a lot depends on the views of the iman or rabbi who is in charge. I also have observed 'traditional' and religeous slaughters and feel very strongly about this, particularly as it is very much a question of interpretation of the local practice, often based on the practice of the area which the local community has the strongest links with.

Maybe but only after I have tryed baby and dog first!!!! its the fact it suports a vile long distance trade and breeding in eastern europe or slaugter by the most barbaric method in mexico that offends most and the fact people would eat something that has given man so much though our history, we have achived so much thanks to the horse.. on that basis I would say only ignorant shallow minded people would condone eating it..,

And on that basis, I would say that you are ignorant and shallow minded (I think you're confusing narrow minded and shallow, by the way).

NO I couldnt and wont, no more than I can eat dog they are pets and give us their loyalty and trust.

I cant even eat something we have brought ourselves to be fattened and killed as I see these as pets. We even had a cow called Beef to fatten and kill, no he lived out his days and is still going as could not stomach the thought of eating him, and he is still going now, would be tough as old ropes I guess if we did try. I wont start on the chickens :).

I have no problem with other people eating it, and can understand how they can, but I just cant myself if I have know them, but then I am not the biggest meat eater in the world, I like it occasionally but not bothered either way.

Personal choice I guess.

personally no i would never eat horse meat, even if i was the last person alive and the only thing that would keep me alive would be to eat an innocent horse/animal not a chance, im veggie so it's not my cup of tea at all, i just couldnt do it let alone thinking about it i just think about the little animal that used to run around before it turned into food
i dont mind other people eating meat as it is just my point of view but if someone in my family ate horse meat, those who have horses (alot of us) i'd definately be asking why!

I have said yes, as by the time it has hit my plate it has already been killed and it would seem a shame not to at least try it.

How can you forget the morals and ethics? I can't. I won't eat battery chicken, and I won't support a trade that abuses 100,000 horses every year.

As personal opinions had already been discussed at length in another thread yesterday, what I meant was exactly what I said, this was intended as a simple yes/no poll.

I saw no reason to discuss it all again in a second thread, of course, I should have made that crystal clear by stating "forget morals and ethics FOR A MINUTE and just press yay or nay."

I wouldn't go out of my way to try it, but I wouldn't have a problem with it if it was served up to me at a restaurant.

I said no, as I don't eat red meat. The smell of it makes me sick, I really mean that!! And I used to be a chef cooking Beef, used to have a face mask on so I couldn't smell it as much.

But I LOVE sea food, I live on fish (wild ones, not the farmed ones) most things in the sea I would eat.

Yes i agree in prinsiple that it may possibly encourage inhumane rearing of the animal for slaughter but what if you knew that it had had a free range british rearing and you could see where it was reared and the quality of life that it had had. Do you eat chicken and if so is it always free range in all the food that you eat and is it from a british origin?

If it was high welfare, I might consider it - sorry OP, I misunderstood.

Sadly the reality is that it is most certainly NOT high-welfare meat, and in fact involves some dreadul abuses, and places wider horse health and human health at risk :(

.. shallow meaning not deep ,lacking depth of character or intellect....im sure that describes some peoples mind set perfectly!!!!

I'm sure it does :) but it's not at all shallow/narrow minded to suggest that every single person on the face of the planet who has tried/would try horse meat is lacking depth of character or intellect, is it? Can you not spot a teeny tiny little bit of irony in that comment? ;)

Yes.
Because to me, if we're going to eat animals, then we don't have the right to say 'well, that one isn't as good, so we can eat it'. If you don't like the taste, different story. But who would I be to say well, I like horses and I don't like cows so I'll eat cows and not horses?! It just doesn't seem right to me somehow. Meat is meat at the end of the day, once it's dead it's not going to know any different.

However, I admit I don't eat much meat because I don't like the texture - doesn't change my view though! If I had the opportunity to try horse meat, I probably would. As long as the animal has lived a decent life and been killed in the most humane way possible, I'm fine with it.

Some 'Farm Assured' meats are raised in appalling conditions. Don't be fooled by that label.
