Would you eat horse meat?

No, but I don't eat any other meat either ;)

TBH, if it's been raised and slaughtered humanely, I don't see how people can view horse as being any different than cow, pig etc.

But I would give it a try (knowing full well it was horse meat).

Yep me too. Have eaten it many years ago.
I believe that if you'll eat one animal why not another.
As long as it is kept well & ethically while alive and slaughtered humanely. Why not?
I only eat meat, eggs, cheese and milk that I know the source of.
 
I'm an advocate for this being the future, sadly it's not going to sort out the now, although I would rather see mass culling right now regardless of the horses being able or not... To go into the food chain. What seriously, seriously angers me is that we as a society of horse lovers and owners have caused this. We can not blame this result on those who breed only for profit, it's something we have all contributed to and our only viable option seems to be to considering culling horses and then branching out and making them a viable food chain option. It's not a food I would ever want to eat, but I think if we as 'horse lovers' want to rescue the breed that we have put in such a serious position, then we must fully get behind the only viable route of resurrecting it. So for me, as much as it pains me, yes I would.
 
I'd eat anything that sits still long enough in a bun with some mustard.

Except Fergus. 'cos I love him, just the way he is.

I live on a farm and whilst we don't raise meat for commercial slaughter we do have 6/7 lambs that we raise for the freezer every year. I see them playing outside my living room window and am happy to eat them as I know they have had a happy life and humane death. I have the same outlook on all my meat, which is why I buy from my local, independent butcher rather than a supermarket as I know the meat is locally raised and well looked after.
 
As long as the horse was humanely, legally and hygienically slaughtered, and the meat prepared, in line with legislation and public health practice, then it's the same as any other meat (in my opinion) x
 
I ate Horse in France many years ago without knowing what it was and I loved it ....a bit like beef but sweeter

I would have no problem eating it in the UK if it was labeled correctly
 
I also would. As much as I love my horses I do not see the difference between eating cow and eating horse (provided they are raised and slaughtered humanely)
I find it very interesting that the majority of horse owners and lovers would have no problem with eating horse meat. It is normally people who have never seen an animal except on their plate who raise huge objections. Obviously this is not always the case however it does say something about how different people view animals. I think those raised in the countryside and around animals often have a far more practical view on how economical and welfare issues could be improved through this.
 
i would not eat horse meat the same as I choose not to eat duck . i raise chickens, lamb and pork for our freezer so have no problem with eating meat that we have raised . For us we would not eat our dogs or cat and that is how we see our equines.

I do not have a problem with anybody else eating horse or anyhing else either . I do like to have the choice though and despise the manufacturers who just bung anything into prepared food .

This - and a long as t isn't one I've been introduced to! I think Prices Anne has a point. It is, however fairly disgraceful that there are only two abbatoirs for horses in the country.
 
No, I would not.
History would have been very different without the sacrifices of working horses. They have been used for transportation, farming and war for centuries because of their willing and cooperative natures.
Ever since they were domesticated, they have held a special role as workers and companions. Horsemen have a special bond with them and trust their lives to them.
Its seems a little disingenuous to repay their loyalty and bravery by eating them.
 
I jokingly said once that when Lotties time came I would have her done for the freezer, it caused outrage, people were horrified by my suggesting it!
BUT.. I know she is well loved, looked after and exactly what medications she has had, which is a plus over most meat. When the time comes her personality, little quirks, her soul as it were will exist only in my heart all that is left is the cloak it was wearing, so why not??
Would I actually do it? Probably not! Would I eat someone else's horse from tesco? Probably not, but I don't see a problem if others want to.
 
If it were the only thing available then yes. I don't see the issue- I like cows but eat beef, same with chickens and pigs.

I can't say a definite no, but given the choice I would choose another meat.

Watched the programme too and people seemed to like it. Have never eaten it myself (knowingly!) but would have no issues if it were properly raised / slaughtered etc. I do eat beef and other meats so as long as I knew it was horse I'm sure I'd be fine with it.
 
I dont like red meat so probably not, but like the majority on here, have no issue with others eating it as long as the horses are well treated and managed responsibly. As someone said earlier though, it wont help with the current crisis. If horses are to be put into the food chain they, presumably, would need to have the same certification that is required of any other animal destined for the table. Im not fully up to speed with all the legislation but dont think its quite as simple as rounding up all the fly grazed/abandoned horses and just turning them into steaks, they would have to be specifically raised from birth and be fully traceable, surely?
