would you ever change a horses name?

Only ever changed 2.

One was a coloured Irish bog pony type, called Apache. Misheard when I tried him out and thought he was called Patrick, which was much more him. They sound virtually the same, so we went for it.

The other was a 13hh coloured cob mare, called Cindy. Cindy! I ask you... She couldn't have been less like a Cindy-doll if she'd tried, being very stout and rather practical looking. We called her Cinders instead :)

Nope, never change them, mainly because im rubbish at thinking of new names, so its easier to stick with what they are called. Worst name we had was Cuddles, i couldnt even think of anything to shorten it to that would sound better lol!

I've changed a few horses names over the years; all been great horses and still are. A great many more though I've just never used their 'barn names' that they came with because I preferred calling them by their nicer registered names instead. Names tickle me though so if I buy a horse with a totally wacky barn name then I usually will keep calling them it :) I seriously dislike human names for horses so I would probably always change that name.

I have changed both my horses names.

GK was originally Randy (which may have suited him as a Stallion, but not as a gelding). It took me ages to find one that fit him, as he is a blokey type horse, moves like a dancer and he is a bit perfectionistic. I finally settled on Gene Kelly as his show name and it fit him well, so it got shortened to GK and it has stuck as his stable name.

Bo was originally Sunny, which was taken from his sire (Desert Sun) and probably his sunny disposition..... Nice enough name, however all the animals called Sunny that I know have been feral little so and so's and I did not want to tempt fate. As a friend and I were sharing him, it took us ages to settle on a name we both liked. We eventually came up with Bonanza (Bo for short), which suits him very well as Bonanza means "A situation or event that creates a sudden increase in wealth, good fortune, or profits." He was given to us for free and is beautifully natured, is a good do-er, has great feet especially considering he is a TB and has beautiful movement. I think his name suits him better than Sunny did. I kept his race name as his show name.

When I got Jazz, I wanted to change his name, because I think of Jazz as a girls name, and he had only had the name for the last 12 months, but then he seemed to know his name and I couldn't think of anything close that I liked.
( I had wanted to change it to Kelpie )
Kx

Dolly was called Dolly when I got her, but apparently was called coral previously at some point. Her name is still Dolly. I always call her lulu, no idea why. When I got Mac, he was Mac, but his paperwork had previously known as Copper on it. Ollie was Ollie, and it suits him. Is funny having a Dolly and an Ollie.

My previous horse came over from Ireland in a group. She was a 15.2hh chestnut and there was also a 16.2hh chestnut mare so they were known as little Shirley and big Shirley after the lady who sent them over. There was no way I was calling her little Shirley so after many weeks of waiting we eventually found out that her real name was in fact Melanie lol. So I changed it to Amber. So she had 3 name changes in the end!

My mare is called Andee which is a bit pants but I can't change it due to slight superstitious and I just can't come up with anything else which suits her. Did change a pony's name who was called Robin which I didn't like so called him Loxley instead - as in Robin of Loxley :)

Yes and I have.

The best pony I could of ever had back when I was a kid, so no bad luck for us. I considered changing my current horses name as well but then it grew on me so I kept it.

Yeah, I do - and yet I would say I am usually quite superstitious. I've kept most of them as the horses were old enough to know and respond to them. But I changed my youngster's name as soon as I got her. Chap who bred her can't name foals to save his life and I hated hers with a passion. She didn't know it and didn't care and while life with her is always...eventful, I'm sure it's got nothing to do with what I'm yelling at her across the field ;-)

Reluctant to, but would if I had to.

I find names tend to grow on you, and they end up with nicknames anyway. I debated changing Rodney... then figured it suited him down to the ground  :D

I keep thier names, I'd only change it if I really hated it, fortunately they tend to have decent names.

Although I did recently buy a Maxine! Which isnt the nicest of names, my Mum hated it & said she was going to change it but I quite like it, so it has stayed.

I thought about changing my Mares name when I got her as I think Smudge sounds like a boy and people are always calling her "him", but in the end I just stuck with it. Her registered name is Afera and she was previously known as Fifi. She mostly gets called Smudge which is slightly more girlie I think and with her colouring it does suit her.
