As above really, I spend a lot if time walking either in the school doing slow work or out hacking and my horse is section d. I am trying not to clip him this year but if I do he will only have a very little amount off th front.

In this situation would you use an exercise sheet in dry weather throughout the winter or will he get too hot? X

i use a fleece lined sheet whether they are clipped or not as its the only reflective sheet i have. non of my horses have felt hot in it but then again they are rugged all winter :)

I rarely use one on my clipped horses, if they are working actively even in walk they should be warm enough unless the weather gets really cold or in heavy rain. A hi viz for hacking is useful though.

No, I doubt it. Unless very fine coated, usually rugged in hw rugs etc. If its freezing & the horse is initially chilly (i.e just taken off a hw rug to ride) I tend to stick a woolen rug round me then throw it off when warmed up. Otherwise unclipped horses I'd only use a no fill waterproof or reflective sheet.

I use one all the time in winter when its cold but only as my horse is fully clipped, wouldnt use one if he wasnt though. If its for hacking though you can get a waterproof hi viz sheet with no lining/fleece just to keep them dry which i use before clipping

Does anyone have any recommendations for a cotton lined exercise sheet, I currently have the mark todd reflective fleece lined one and am finding my horse is getting too hot in it as it has been so warm when its been hammering down with rain!

I might use a waterproof one in wet weather on an unclipped horse and I use a hi-viz mesh one but I wouldn't use a wool or fleece one on an unclipped horse unless I was schooling/hacking in really really cold weather, even then I'd probably only do it if the horse was restricted to walk work, otherwise I'd just pick up trot early and get us both generating our own heat.

I use a hi viz one for hacking out, either in the rain or just if its a wee bit dull. Its a polite one and is is breathable yet waterproof. He is an unclipped cob and he stays cool under it. After a fleecy one for when he is clipped, just a quarter sheet so it be removed once we get going and put back on to cool down.

I always use on in winter, I know that until I get going I feel cold, and then once done a round or test the cold air against my warm muscles is cold, so it must be for horse too,
Also use it for waiting around either in between classes or waiting for jump offf
