buy a horse unseen? Now I am NOT talking about from a dealer specialising in this type of practise, I am talking about a horse you have seen privately advertised, have vetted, but you have not personally ridden. You have recommendations on the horse too.

Yes probably. If it had been vetted, recomended, and was what i wanted in a horse!.Are you shopping again weezy??.

Just leading on from a convo a friend and I were having. Both of us have had horses that we haven't immediately gotten on with. I had to ride whatever came on the yard when I worked with horses, regardless of whether I would have chosen them or not. So hypotetically if you saw a horse on the opposite side of the country and it came recommended is there any reason to miss out?

Depends WHO recommended it - it would have to be someone who I knew well & vice versa. I wouldn't take the opinion of someone regardless of how trustworthy & experienced/capable they were, if they didn't know me very well, as it IS such a personal thing.

That said, selling a horse on isn't a big thing for some people so lots would take the chance - not sure that's very fair on the horse though!

I prob wouldn't, I think looks AND reccomendations can be decieving and would like to try the horse first to see its way of going and if i liked it or not tbh if i was about to spend money on it - if it came that highly recommended it would be worth the trip to wherever it was in the country to go try it

OK, so what if it was a bit of a bargain and you could sell it on immediately for a couple of grand more than you bought it for if you decided it wasn't for you?

Yep if it was recommended and vetted then it is worth a go. I mean we tried our guy and he seemed fine, he vetted ok and then he went psyco but we are getting there

If I was buying the horse to sell and it was quiet and sane wouldn't matter if I did like it or not or got on with it. However if I was looking for a replacement horse I would want to try it first.

I have bought a couple unseen and not regretted any of them, but only one of them completely blind just on the horses records, could have been a half dead donkey when arrived but turned out to be the best buy ever, sometimes you have to take a risk but I also consider the pros and cons of what could happen and its not a practise I enter into lightly!

I wouldn't think it fair if the horse was a nervy sort who would be unsettled by an additional move - of course many horses don't seem to suffer from that though...

Yes!! after 23 years of not riding I waded out into a field dragged a Stinkerstoker back (after dragging one of the Queen's horses back on holiday- good taste or what!!!!!!!!!!), bought her unvetted or ridden, did not regret a moment!

Yes, probably. I like a challenge.
I bought my foal off of a photo and trust.

One of the best decisions I have ever made.
I always think if the gut feeling is right, go with it.

Yes I would....but only if it was vetted. I bought a couple of horses blind 3 years ago, neither expensive, both were rubbish. Sold them on and vowed never to do it again.....however I almost did with a youngster I saw for sale a month or so ago. I didn't and now I wish I had as the line was so rare. Heyho!

Yes, I have done twice! One was only £500 and I saw pictures of it, discussed in depth with the owner and made sure she signed paperwork confirming the horse was sound, safe, no problems etc. and also spoke to her vet. The pony ended up being super.

Have also bought another horse who I watched a DVD of. I had him vetted where he was and bought him. He was only a 3yo so very green and he tried me on seriously when I got him. He was also very bolshy and basically pretty horrid (they'd said he had good manners which was crap as it was clear he'd been allowed to think he was boss for some time). He is still a bit of a s*it-bag somedays but I dont regret buying him. If Id gone to see him, I think I would have offered less money though!

I haven't personally, but I sold Ali unseen last May to an excellent endurance home in Scotland, very sadly when he was vetted it was discovered that he was practically completely blind and understandably the sale fell through.

I would buy unseen but would have a thorough vetting.
