I entered a tiny little show which was running dressage and show jumping, just to get us out and about at this time of year. As it was dressage I wanted to do I had to pay upfront with my entry form(the sj could be pay on the day). Anyway , 1 week in advance I had to cancel as I didn't have transport.

Would you expect your money back?
 
No. You would only get your money back in exceptional circumstances normally - if the horse was severely lame and you could get the vet to write a note.
 
No, not really. I only expect my money back if I can produce a vet cert. saying the horse is lame or the show is cancelled. Sorry.
 
I would expect the money back as you cancelled in advance, but it all depends on the vendors terms I suppose. Or they could keep the money and you get free entry for the next dressage comp? Have you asked for a refund?

Depends on what the entry conditions were. If before the closing date for entries its worth asking but would not expect it but if after then no i would not expect money back once closing date had passed and wouldnt ask either with the exception of some venues/events do refund on the production of a vet certificate for lameness/injury.
 
Will check the rules but I dOnt think it says anything.

Lea840- it may be a few quid to you but for £20 I could enter another few shows!
 
£20 does seem very expensive for a single dressage test, (my last combined training wasn't much more than that) but perhaps OP entered 2 prelims at the same show, in which case the price would seem about right??
 
Yeah £10 per class... but if you have paid £20 per class then you need to speak to the rip off's and ask why they are charging double what most other places charge...
 
If you were cancelling due to a vetenary reason - i'd say possibly.

But as your cancelling due to lack of transport - i'd say nope. the fact that you cannot get/arrange transport for the day is not the concern of the organisers but something perhaps you should have had in place before entering the show.
 
It was in place before the show! Goodness. Unfortunately due to unforeseen cicumstances I could no longer use the 4x4 that day to tow.

I'm not arguing that I should and want my money back, I'm just asking what the scenario is with regards to canceling. Now I know for the majority of places to refund it would need to be a vet related incident.
 
In that case I'd definitely ring the secretary asap (check times on schedule for calling), be very nice and apologetic and ask if you can postpone your entry to the next show (and book use of the 4x4 well in advance). Am sure they won't want to alienate you by refusing quite a reasonable (at this stage) request
 
Thank you for the sensible replies. I may well contact her, I just wondered if it was the done thing or whether or not to leave it. The 4x4 actually became damaged as the front coil spring snapped- it wasn't a case of booking or whatnot, it was simply misfortune.

Row reach- if everyone on here asked the 'proper' person their question, we wouldn't have a very good forum!

IIRC at RC any withdrawls before the closing date were refunded. 'Your space' can then be refilled' and times etc will not be done yet.

Double?! Do you guys only pay £5 per dressage class?! My area charges £8 - £10 for a dressage class and thats only little unaffiliated stuff.

I think as you cancelled a week in advance, they should tear up your cheque. I dont see why they should keep your money when you dont get to compete (for whatever reason). I hate this "no refunds" thing, why on earth not?! You're paying to compete, you don't do so for whatever reason so why cant they give your money back?! Otherwise you're paying for something you don't do/get. I can understand why they keep your money if they've already done times coz that messes those up and they'd have paid for a judge by then.
 
You can ask-they can only say no. Or scrounge a lift? Sell your entry to someone else? Try to get the car fixed in time? Or just say **** happens and write it off.
