Would you fully insure ? What other options are out there, help ?

14yo 14.2hh mare with limb exclusions (Hock & hind PSD) and colic - despite one very, very, very mild episode in the extreme heat of 2020 of a little bit of gut discomfort. No impactions, normal droppings etc and recovered in a matter of a few hours after fluids. Conested exclusion with letter from vet but to no avail ! Very angry !!!

Renewal is £65 a month so I'm considering self insuring by putting money away or are there any other options I could explore ie catasrophe cover ?

Daughter is a Gold BHS member so has Public Liability and Personal Accident cover.

What do you do if you're in a similar position, thoughts and advice gratefully received

Personally I think that if you DO find an insurer to cover for these exigencies (which tbh is doubtful) then you will pay through the nose and have every excess and exclusion thrown right back at you to the extent that the insurance won't be worth having in existence!

I'd be inclined to insure for PL and then squirrel away what you'd have spent on premiums for a rainy day.

I have an 18 yr old Welsh who has only been insured for public liability for the past 4/5 years due to a high number of exclusions, and a 28 yr old Arab who is also only insured for PL. I have enough savings to cover emergency treatment and would not put them through colic surgery or do things such as lengthy lameness explorations. The main thing is to have public liability insurance - we have it through the BHS.

Exactly as HashRouge - 18yo horse with PL cover through the BHS. Both front legs were excluded in their entirety 10 years ago from a check ligament injury to one, insurance cancelled a year or two after that. I wouldn't put him through anything requiring a GA so no colic surgery etc. and I have savings/access to a CC with a decent limit if necessary.

Have a think (realistically) about what veterinary intervention you would want if it was going to cost a lot / impact quality of life - that should steer you towards the right type of insurance or leave uninsured.

So for me, the oldies/retired ones take their chances. I’ll fund a certain amount but they don’t get £1000’s just to keep them retired.

The young non ridden ones are on catastrophe cover, I’d intervene and save if possible but equally while they are unproven there would be a limit (plus I’m happy just to save them for their bloodlines/breeding if it came to it).
