Would you get an unbroken horse on loan??

No, because I wouldn't want to do all the work of breaking it, for the owner to take it back once it was rideable.

I appreciate this isn't always the situation, but answering your question without any further assumptions, no.

Depends what for...

If in need of a companion, possibly.

To back, well, most experienced people would expect to be paid and the loaner might not want someone just plannign on 'having a go' to attempt it.

To show in-hand? Possibly if v pretty/typey...

Unfortunately I'm not in a position to do any of the above atm.

Probably not. Why would anyone? Unless they lacked practical experience and specifically wanted experience in backing horses. But most people capable of backing and schooling on, charge!

depends on what you and the owner are both looking for really = when daughter was young I took a just backed 4yr old section b- totally green on loan -paid money for daughter (was second pony BTW she got first when a week old lol ) to have lessons with great instructor who brought them both on- we had the pony for just over 2 years and he went back sadly as daughter out grew him but I dont resent that at all - my daughter competed in leadrein and first ridden and done well learnt loads and had the time of her life with the pony as he was a pure star and he then went on to another family who also loved him to bits - but I understood from start that after all our hard work he would go home and just proud we gave him a great start - so yeah depends what you are both looking for

domino it does depend on individuals - I knew what was taking on with the young lad when we took him on loan and ok he was sold and the owner made some good money but my daughter learnt so much he was a joy to have and me and my daughter have some brilliant memories of her childhood so hey finacially we didnt gain but well sometimes it isnt all about money - and hey knowing that little chap went on and did quite well in showring after us makes me smille - a photo of him and daughter cheek to cheek is still on my wall some 14 years later - priceless

Sadly I have experienced this before. I took on a pretty much unbacked mare (she had only been leant over, sat on once or twice etc) and bought her on with some help from my instructor at the time. The initial loan contract was for 6 months with view to extend it after. After 3 months we had made massive progress, she was hacking out like a star and turning into a really safe little mare, the perfect childs pony. I made the mistake of giving the owners regular updates and then about 2 and a half/3 months before we were going to look at renewing the loan contract they said I either had to buy her or they would be taking her back to sell on (after all my hard work, funnily enough).. Realisticly I would not have been able to buy her as maybe a few years down the line I would have outgrown her and for the price they wanted for her, it was just totally unrealistic. They told me this on the Wednesday and came and collected her that weekend :-( I was so upset as she was fantastic and we had had so much fun together. I'd love to know where she is now and what shes up to. x
