Would you get in touch with old owners to find out more?

I tracked down the first recorded owner of my horse - answered a lot of questions but also caused a few issues as they were supposed to be given 1st refusal if she was moved on! Anyway they came to visit her, seemed happy that their brat of a foal was now a sturdy 5 year old with someone who could deal with the bratty behaviour.

I did in about 2005/6 with my old cob as I was curious. I did actually hear back from most of the places I contacted, who unfortunately could not place him. Downside to coming over from Ireland, most likely enmasse.

When I got my girl nearly 2 years ago I posted on HHO and her breeder in Holland is a member and sent me a message! I have since sent a few updates and always get a lovely reply. I also asked about an issue I was having with other horses and they said it was hereditary, which was interesting to learn.
I am not sure if there is anything I wouldn't want to find out, as others have said as long as you are focussed on the horse in front of you then you can't go wrong. You could get an insight into their past, or someone to send pictures to.
I would be happy if any of my old horses new owners contacted me, though the only 1 I don't know what happened to is probably dead by now as she was my first pony.

I am also very tempted to do this! Though I can imagine it would be difficult... My boy is 15, i've had him a year and so I don't think if i find out he was a nightmare in his past that would phase me as he is a pretty good boy now and has been for the year. The only person in his passport is his breeder :( I know the people who I bought him off are on facebook and could message them, they only had him 6 months and bought him from a dealer.

I am tempted to ask the name of the dealer and see if I can track anything. Hopefully, if it was a decent dealer then will have records of horses they have sold but I'm not sure if all do this and if not they may not remember as it would be around 18 months ago now! I could contact his breeder but they are from Germany and as he's 15 might not remember!

As I got him as a middle-aged man, i'd just love to find out what he did when he was a youngster. He does an amazing leg yield (when he wants to), flying changes (rarely, when he wants to) etc etc. I know he didn't learn this with the previous owners as they didn't school him so he must have learnt it when he was younger!! He was brought over to the UK at age 10 so there must have been a reason!

I say go for it OP. So long as you just want information and nothing they say will worry you, there is no reason no to. You might not get a reply but then there's not harm in asking!

I did when i first bought my horses. I got a lovely response with a really nice picture. A couple of months later, i'd completley forgot about it to be honest and i got a friend request off the ladies daughter who bred him. she gave me loads of information and said her mum wanted to get back to me but had misplaced my address. 8 years on we still keep in touch via facebook and she likes and comments on every picture i put on of him

I tried to find the breeder of my horse Zack but failed and then a couple of years later he found me via Facebook. Apparently Zack was his first homebred and he had lost contact with him, so was extremely pleased to hear about him. He also gave me loads of photos of him as a foal and his mother.
